Job Profile Summary

Performs basic and intermediate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures under the direction of the Radiologist.

Job Description Major Responsibilities

  • Competently operates magnetic resonance (MR) equipment used to perform basic and intermediate diagnostic procedures, including routine musculoskeletal, neurological, and orthopedic imaging, arthrogram, neurological angiography, body imaging, and small joint imaging.
  • Obtains medical history from patients, compares requisitions to physician's orders to ensure exam accuracy, and prepares and administers contrast media under the direction of the Radiologist.
  • Positions patient and selects proper scanning factors, adjusts factors to attain appropriate images, and provides magnet protection and safety in accordance with regulatory agencies.
  • Post-processes images as directed and accurately identifies and labels images with patient name, medical record unit (MRU) number, and scan location. Maintains records in accordance with regulations, enters patient and study information into the radiology information system, and documents billing codes to ensure accurate charges.
  • Identifies equipment performance issues, performs quality assurance tests and calibration procedures, reports malfunctioning equipment to appropriate staff, and evaluates new products and equipment.
  • Performs patient positioning and transporting duties, including lifting and pushing/pulling, using proper technique.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide age‑appropriate care, interpreting age‑specific needs and following department policies and procedures.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required

  • Registered Technologist (RT) registration issued by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) registration and certification issued by the ARRT must be obtained within 2 years, or MRI certification by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT), or MRI certification by the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) must be obtained within 6 months unless the department leader has determined it is not required.

Education Required

  • Advanced training beyond high school that includes completion of an accredited or approved program in Radiologic Technology.

Experience Required

  • No experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of cross‑sectional anatomy and magnetic safety.
  • Competence in IV and venipuncture (if required by facility).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and patient service skills to work effectively with physicians, patients and other staff members.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Certification addendum: Team members will maintain annual educational requirements for hospital‑based certifications (e.g., DNV, CARF or others).

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders frequently throughout the workday.
  • Lifting: up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist; up to 20 lbs. over the head; up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
  • Pushing/pulling with 30 lbs. of force; performing a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radiation and magnetic hazards as well as blood and body fluids; personal protective equipment must be worn as necessary.
  • Operate all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Must have clear speech, vision and hearing.

  • Beds: 6 scanners (currently operating 5 scanners)
  • Experience: 3‑5 years in MRI
  • First‑time traveler: Yes
  • Weekly census 250‑300 patients

Patient Types

  • Outpatient, Inpatient, ED: patients with implantable devices, neuro, oncology, musculoskeletal, ventilated, sedated, whole body, cardiac experience preferred as of 8/25

Patient Ratios

  • 1:1

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ARRT‑MR or ARMRIT

Skills required

  • Experience with the above patient types
  • Client and Siemens experience required

Support on the Unit

  • Lead Tech/Coordinator
  • Imaging Assistants
  • Traveler will never be alone

  • Siemens Magnetom Skyra – required
  • McKesson PACS – required

Floating

  • None – MRI only

Orientation

  • 3 days of orientation

Scheduling

  • Weekend rotation: maximum every 3rd weekend
  • On Call – Saturday and Sunday night 21:00‑06:30; 1‑2 first shift backup on‑call shifts/week; participation in weekend on‑call rotation approximately once every 8 weeks
  • Back up on call – Saturday and Sunday 06:30‑21:00
  • 30 minute response time
  • Holiday expectations: based on unit needs
