Tort Defense Attorney


Position Overview


We are seeking a skilled Tort Defense Attorney to join our litigation team to defend clients in complex civil matters, including personal injury, mass tort, and tort claims. The ideal candidate will manage case strategy from intake through trial, collaborate with insurance carriers, and provide effective legal advocacy to minimize liability exposure and achieve favorable outcomes.


Key Responsibilities



  • Manage a caseload of tort and civil defense matters including personal injury, product liability, medical malpractice, and mass tort claims.

  • Conduct factual and legal investigation, draft pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and responses, and handle e-discovery and document review.

  • Develop and implement case strategy, including liability and damages analysis, settlement evaluation, and trial preparation.

  • Represent clients at depositions, hearings, mediations, and trials; prepare witnesses and exhibit materials.

  • Coordinate with insurance carriers, expert witnesses, co-counsel, and outside vendors to support litigation needs.

  • Handle motion practice, legal research, and drafting of briefs and memoranda addressing complex tort issues.

  • Maintain clear, timely communication with clients, insurance adjusters, and internal team members regarding case status and strategy.

  • Ensure compliance with court rules, deadlines, and billing and documentation requirements; supervise paralegals and junior attorneys as needed.

  • Participate in business development activities, client pitches, and continuing legal education to stay current on tort law developments.


Qualifications



  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active bar admission in the hiring jurisdiction.

  • 3+ years of civil litigation experience with significant exposure to tort defense and personal injury matters; experience with mass torts preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in all phases of litigation including discovery, depositions, motion practice, and trial advocacy.

  • Strong knowledge of tort law, negligence principles, product liability, and tort claims procedures.

  • Proven ability to manage heavy caseloads, prioritize deadlines, and work independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills, legal research abilities, and attention to detail.

  • Experience working with insurance carriers, adjusting strategies for coverage and reserve considerations.

  • Ability to develop and maintain client relationships; strong negotiation and settlement skills.

  • Comfortable supervising support staff and mentoring junior attorneys; commitment to professional development.
