As a Tobacco Treatment Counselor, you will play a meaningful part in helping patients navigate one of the most important aspects of their cancer journey: quitting tobacco and building healthier habits that support treatment, recovery, and long-term wellness.This role combines compassionate counseling, education, and ongoing support to help individuals facing cancer-related challenges. You'll work closely with patients and the care team to provide evidence-based tobacco treatment services through individual and group sessions delivered in person, by phone, and virtually.If you are passionate about behavioral health, patient advocacy, and helping people make lasting changes during some of the most challenging moments of their lives, this could be an excellent opportunity for you.What You'll DoProvide tobacco cessation counseling to patients diagnosed with cancer using evidence-based approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewingEducate patients about tobacco treatment options and medications that can support their quit journeyConduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments to understand each patient's needs and goalsFacilitate individual and group treatment sessions in person, by telephone, and virtuallyCoordinate appointments and support the organization of treatment groupsCollaborate with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other members of the cancer care team to support patient successHelp patients address challenges that may impact their tobacco treatment goals, including:Stress and anxietyMental health concernsOther substance use disordersFamily and relationship challengesAging-related concernsEmotional and physical effects of cancer and its treatmentProvide compassionate support and intervention when patients are experiencing thoughts of self-harm or emotional distressDocument care and maintain patient records in accordance with organizational standardsWhat You'll BringThe most successful candidates will be compassionate listeners, skilled communicators, and strong advocates for patients.You may be a great fit if you:Have experience providing counseling, behavioral health, social work, or patient support servicesAre comfortable building trusting relationships with individuals from diverse backgroundsUse a patient-centered approach and meet people where they are in their journeyHave experience with motivational interviewing, behavioral change counseling, or related therapeutic techniquesCan manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detailWork well both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare teamAre passionate about improving health outcomes and helping people achieve meaningful changeCommunicate effectively in person, virtually, and over the phoneWhy You'll Love Working HereAt Roswell Park, you'll be part of an organization with a long history of innovation, compassion, and leadership in cancer care. Incumbents must have a successful completion of the provided accredited Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) training and obtain national TTS certification within one (1) year of appointment as a condition of continued employment.2.
