Speech and Language Pathologist
Conduct assessments and evaluations to determine individuals' levels of receptive and expressive speech and language skills, swallowing skills, and social/pragmatic skills. Develop, modify, and implement individual and group therapy and treatment programs to enhance communication, address swallowing deficiencies, and prevent asphyxiation. Recommend changes in food texture and liquid consistency during meals and snacks. Confer with medical staff regarding medications to improve swallowing and participate in suggested barium swallowing studies and follow-up. Design and personally deliver speech, language, and dysphagia management services for individuals and groups. Provide training and support for individuals using hearing aids and teach survival signs and articulation training. Utilize appropriate functional social communication skills during shopping, dining, and other outings. Demonstrate language techniques and the use of augmentative communication devices. Design and deliver in-service training for staff on speech-language techniques and protocols for carrying out communication and swallowing therapies. Act as a sign language interpreter as necessary. Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team to provide professional insights and goal planning for treatment and care. Attend meetings, workshops, and seminars to enhance professional skills and knowledge. Counsel and inform guardians and family members regarding speech-language, hearing, and swallowing issues. Compose and complete reports, lesson plans, and other program-related documents necessary for implementing and tracking treatment programs. Operate a personal computer with office systems software and specialized communication software to create and store records and reports. Maintain electronic augmentative communication devices and hearing aids.
