Test Engineer P&C 1 (Protection & Control)Location: Birmingham, AL 35203 Duration: 1.5 Years Work Schedule: 40 hours/weekPosition SummaryWe are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Test Engineer – Protection & Control (P&C) to join the Substation Integration & Automation (SIA) team. This role is responsible for supporting commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance activities associated with substation SCADA systems, relay protection equipment, and industrial control systems.The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles, power systems, and communication technologies, along with the ability to work safely and effectively in field and substation environments.Key ResponsibilitiesPerform commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of substation SCADA systems, protection & control relays, intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), and industrial control systems and PLCs.Support integration and automation activities for substations and related infrastructure.Conduct power system calculations, measurements, and equipment verification.Configure and troubleshoot serial and Ethernet communication systems and protocols.Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control drawings.Use test equipment, multimeters, laptops, and diagnostic tools in electrical environments.Coordinate field activities while ensuring projects are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.Collaborate with engineering teams, technicians, and operations personnel to resolve technical issues.Maintain compliance with company safety standards and work practices.Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.0–5 years of relevant experience in power systems, substations, SCADA, or industrial controls.Basic understanding of electrical power systems and substation operations.Ability to work onsite and in field environments.Preferred QualificationsExperience commissioning and testing substation SCADA equipment.Experience or training with microprocessor-based relays and IED technology, serial and Ethernet communications, industrial control systems and PLCs, relay protection and control systems, AC/DC electrical systems.Familiarity with communication protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, or IEC standards.Knowledge of three-phase power calculations and measurements.Desired Skills & CompetenciesStrong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.Knowledge of safe work practices in substation or industrial environments.Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively within a team.Proficiency with spreadsheets and standard computer productivity tools.Ability to interface with microprocessor-based devices and control systems.Comfortable working in industrial and outdoor environments with required PPE.Work EnvironmentPrimarily onsite and field-based work in substations and industrial facilities.Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE).May involve travel to substations and project sites as needed.
