Temporary Visitor Experience/BMA Shop Associate - Full Time

The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) seeks enthusiastic and experienced Temporary Visitor Experience/BMA Shop Associate. The ideal candidate will ensure a welcoming, seamless experience for visitors and will rotate between the box office and retail kiosk duties while acting as an ambassador for the institution using their excellent communication and customer service skills. As a highly visible representative of the museum to the public, the Temporary Visitor Experience/BMA Shop Associate must be a must be a friendly, collaborative team member with the ability to handle a wide array of relationships and visitors, members, staff and guest needs. The ideal candidate will have impeccable communication and customer service skills and will be comfortable managing multiple priorities while working in a public-facing, team-based environment.

This temporary, full-time, non-exempt position reports to the Assistant Director of Visitor Experience. The position will begin in September 2026 and continue through September 2027. The incumbent will be scheduled to work 35 to 40 hours per week on-site at the BMA. Required workdays are Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., and Thursday between 9:15 a.m. and 9:15 p.m. (schedule varies). Additional shifts may be required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Exhibition Visitor Experience / Box Office responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Providing exemplary customer service to BMA visitors and members
  • Promoting museum membership, repeat visitation, exhibitions, programs, and the museum’s collection
  • Answering guest questions and processing admission for museum programs, exhibitions, and special events
  • Promoting and executing ticket sales and admissions for special ticketed exhibitions
  • Assisting visitors with parking-related processes
  • Fielding phone calls from visitors with questions
  • Serving as a liaison between visitors and BMA colleagues
  • Efficient and effective communication with other front-of-house teams including Security, Facilities, Events, and the BMA Shop
  • Performing daily visitor experience operations at the Box Office, Coat Check, and Information Desk
  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the Information Desk, phones, laptops, and touchscreen surfaces through routine cleaning and disinfection.

Retail Kiosk / Shop Support responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Deliver excellent customer service, ensuring a positive and welcoming retail experience.
  • Assess customer needs and provide assistance and product information.
  • Maintain stock levels and kiosk organization as sales are completed.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Amy Sherald's artwork and related shop products.
  • Communicate efficiently with front-of-house teams and shop managers.
  • Maintain cleanliness of kiosk surfaces and equipment.
  • Share visitor feedback on products with shop managers and buyers to inform replenishment decisions.
  • Process POS (point-of-sale) transactions accurately.
  • Collaborate with VEAs to ensure seamless visitor and customer service across functions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum 1-3 years of cash handling experience and demonstrated customer service experience required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong interpersonal and de-escalation abilities
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced, visitor-focused environment
  • Multilingual candidates are preferred; proficiency in Spanish, French, Mandarin, or other languages is a plus
  • Adaptable, resourceful, and comfortable learning new processes and technologies in a dynamic workplace
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to remain calm and effective during high-volume or stressful situations
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, email, and internet applications
  • Experience using PCs and working with a multi-line phone system, photocopier, and scanner
  • Familiarity with or ability to learn membership database, ticketing, and/or POS software
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Appreciation for art, museums, and creating welcoming experiences for diverse audiences

SALARY $21.95 per hour
