Writes about model evaluation and benchmarks (including vibe-coding benchmarks mentioned in media), focusing on measuring LLM/NLP capabilities and how they perform in real workflows.

About the Role

Technical Writer to produce clear, accurate, and timely long-form content and analyses about AI model evaluation, benchmarks, and policy; work cross-functionally with research, engineering, product, and customers to make Vals a trusted voice on model capabilities. Position is in-person in San Francisco with relocation support.

Job Description

Role

Vals AI is hiring a Technical Writer to explain which AI models work, how enterprises should evaluate them, and how the industry should measure progress. The writer will produce benchmark reports, product launches, customer stories, model analyses, technical explainers, and occasional policy pieces that translate technical work into accessible, authoritative content.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce long-form technical content: benchmark reports, research blog posts, product launch copy, customer stories, technical case studies, and model analyses.
  • Interview customers, researchers, engineers, and technical leaders and turn conversations into publishable long-form pieces.
  • Ghostwrite and edit for leadership and technical team members as needed.
  • Help set content strategy by deciding what Vals should write about, not just executing a content calendar.
  • Ship fast — deliver publishable posts with rapid turnaround when major models or events occur.
  • Collaborate closely with research, engineering, product, and customer teams.

Requirements

  • Portfolio of long-form technical writing (published essays, research posts, lab posts, or industry reporting).
  • Strong technical literacy: able to read papers and research reviews and produce accurate, sharp content without needing to develop models yourself.
  • Clear editorial point of view, the ability to critique weak takes, and strong judgment about what’s interesting.
  • Fast turnaround speed; able to produce publishable material quickly.
  • Ability to work in-person in San Francisco; relocation support provided.

Nice to Haves

  • Prior research communications experience at an AI lab or research-led startup.
  • A technical background (CS, ML, math, sciences) previously translated into writing (e.g., engineer or PM turned writer).
  • Prior writing for top-tier technical publications or engineering blogs.
  • Highly competitive salary and meaningful equity/ownership.
  • Relocation and transportation support.
  • Full health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Lunch and dinner provided; free snacks, coffee, and drinks.
  • 401(k) plan.
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • $1,500 housing stipend (within one-mile radius).

Notes

Position focuses on communicating about evaluation of LLMs, NLP, and foundation-model behavior and benchmarks. The role emphasizes speed, editorial judgment, and cross-functional collaboration with technical teams.
