Technical Product Manager | Building Energy Performance & Geothermal Optimization

Overview

We are partnering with a rapidly growing clean energy and building performance organization focused on helping commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities reduce energy consumption, improve operational efficiency, and accelerate electrification initiatives.

This opportunity sits at the intersection of HVAC engineering, building automation, IoT, energy analytics, and product management. The successful candidate will become the internal subject matter expert on geothermal and building energy systems while owning the strategy, execution, and evolution of an intelligent software platform used to monitor and optimize building performance at scale.

This is not a traditional Product Manager role. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in HVAC, controls, geothermal, building automation, or energy engineering with the ability to translate operational challenges into software capabilities and product strategy.

Responsibilities

Geothermal & HVAC Systems Expertise

• Become the internal expert on geothermal system performance, degradation, efficiency, and optimization.
• Analyze real-world system behavior and translate operational findings into product requirements.
• Develop fault detection logic for:
• Heat pump failures
• Thermal imbalance
• Performance degradation
• Sensor anomalies
• Borefield performance issues
• Define KPIs, thresholds, alarms, and automated workflows that allow systems to detect issues without human intervention.
• Leverage thermodynamic principles to evaluate system behavior and performance.

Product Management & Roadmap Ownership

• Own and execute the product roadmap from concept through deployment.
• Partner with leadership to define long-term platform strategy.
• Evaluate new market opportunities, asset classes, and product enhancements.
• Gather feedback from customers, facilities teams, building engineers, and contractors to inform product direction.
• Balance customer needs, technical constraints, and business priorities when making roadmap decisions.

Engineering Execution

• Create developer-ready requirements including:
• User stories
• Acceptance criteria
• Functional specifications
• Edge case documentation
• Data contracts
• Translate HVAC, controls, building systems, and operational concepts into engineering requirements.
• Work closely with software teams during development cycles.
• Prioritize backlog items and support sprint planning activities.
• Serve as the bridge between field operations and software engineering teams.

Building Analytics & Fault Detection

• Develop automated building analytics capabilities.
• Create frameworks for:
• Fault Detection & Diagnostics (FDD)
• Predictive maintenance
• Energy optimization
• Equipment performance monitoring
• Interpret operational trends and identify patterns that can be automated through software.
• Support digital twin, building intelligence, and optimization initiatives.

IoT & Data Management

• Define data quality standards across cloud and edge environments.
• Improve reliability of:
• Sensor networks
• Building automation systems
• Data collection architectures
• Telemetry platforms
• Address:
• Sensor dropout
• Calibration issues
• Data latency
• Resolution mismatches
• Outlier detection
• Partner with engineering teams on dashboard design, monitoring tools, and data validation frameworks.

Compensation

• Base Salary: $140,000 - $160,000
