We operate a modern development team where product leaders and team builders execute features using mostly AI agent workflows (Cursor), supported by robust automated CI/CD, unit testing, Storybook, Chromatic, and ad-hoc QA.
What We Need:
With our core architecture established, we are looking for a seasoned, hands-on Fractional Head of
Engineering / Technical Architect to step in as our senior technical partner. You will partner directly with the CEO/Product Owner and our Project Manager to oversee architectural integrity, unblock development, and ensure safe, reliable deployments. You communicate with empathy, clarity, and zero ego.
You explain technical trade-offs, risks, and alternatives in plain business terms so executive leadership and product management are never left guessing what is happening under the hood.
Transparent Communication: You are comfortable jumping into quick Slack huddles or Zoom calls with yourcamera on to collaborate, unblock builders, or align with leadership.
You are not expected to write routine code from scratch—our Cursor-driven workflow and frontend builders, handle user-facing implementations. Instead, you will be focused on the backend foundation, database layer, Hasura configurations, and PR review process, ensuring the agents build securely and without architectural bloat.
Fluency in English: Fluent English proficiency (written and spoken) with exceptional clarity when explaining complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:
● Feature Architecture & Plan Review: Review and pressure-test technical plans generated for features and bugs before development begins. Prevent code bloat, spot architectural traps early, and ensure features are broken down into small, verifiable stages in Linear.
● Hands-on Backend & Data Layer Ownership: Execute and manage database migrations (PostgreSQL), Hasura metadata/action updates, and data-layer branches across our multi-repo setup. Provide the necessary schema scaffolding so Cursor agents can build features cleanly.
● PR Review & Deployment Gatekeeping: Serve as the senior code reviewer. Ensure database
migrations are safely applied to staging and production, verify Hasura permissions, and oversee
release promotions without breaking changes.
● Escalation & Unblocking: Step in when Cursor agents hit technical walls involving complex business
logic, backend authentication, performance bottlenecks, or tricky state management.
● Security & Infrastructure Oversight: Triage automated security scan findings, maintain Vercel
deployment stability, and ensure compliance standards (FERPA/HIPAA alignment for school data)
