Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
- Selecting instrumentation appropriate for procedure.
- Wiping down room and checking room for cleanliness, availability of supplies and equipment at the beginning of the day.
- Opening sterile packs and supplies, using surgeon's preference card for specific requests. Use supplies conservatively and efficiently.
- Scrub hands and arms according to Sterile Scrub Techniques Policy. Dons sterile gown and gloves, maintaining sterile technique.
- Setting up back table and mayo using surgeon's preference card as a reference for instruments, medications, etc.
- Maintaining proper sterile technique when gowning and gloving the Surgeon. Assisting with draping of patient and confirming the operative area and procedure with the surgeon and OR team.
- Preparing the field with appropriate equipment to begin the procedure (Example: bovie, suction, light source, camera).
- Performing sponge, needle and instrument counts with Circulator, if required.
- During procedure, passing instruments to surgeon and the assistant, being attentive to operative area by being alert for breaks in technique, maintaining an attitude of willingness to assist with the procedure, and being aware of the location of all instruments, needles, sponges, and specimens.
- Keeping mayo and back table neat and orderly.
- Caring for the specimen following Operating Room policy and procedure.
- Assisting the surgeon with dressings at the end of the procedure.
- After the procedure, breaking down back table and disposing of sharps in an accepted manner. Removing and accounting for all instruments used in the field.
- Keeping delicate instruments separate from heavy items.
- Following proper procedures regarding exposure to Category I tasks. Following universal precautions/BBP standards at all times. Eye protection will be worn by Surgery Center scrub personnel at all times.
- Following proper procedures for handling hazardous waste materials.
- As part of the OR team: Transporting soiled instruments to decontamination room to soak or wash. Preparing soiled instruments for cleaning, wash, decontaminate and reprocess in steam autoclave using appropriate cycle. Taking clean instruments to workroom for reprocessing. Identifying items in each load appropriately. Putting unused sterile instruments and all supplies away. Restocking operating room and sterile supply room. Terminally cleaning OR rooms at end of day's schedule. Conducting autoclave testing appropriately and documenting results appropriately. Notifying Director of Nursing of any deficiencies in sterilizing process and completing report if necessary.
- Assisting with any other duties as needed.
