Teaching Assistant | Boston Childrens Hospital
Under the direct supervision of the homeroom Special Educator, the Teaching Assistant aids in the day-to-day operation of the classroom and with the implementation of each homeroom student's Individualized Education Program Plan.
Principal Duties And Responsibilities
- Assists in provision of special education services to students in accordance with individualized education program plans and school practices.
- Implements a daily schedule of events and activities that reflect content, pacing and variety appropriate to identified student needs and skills.
- Follows scheduled activity plans with students.
- Uses educational materials with students, safely and effectively, in keeping with established classroom activities and procedures.
- Encourages student involvement in activities and decisions related to their learning and conduct.
- Provides positive guidance and supports for safety and learning to students in a fair, affirming and dignified manner, consistent with prescribed classroom procedures.
- Assists students in meeting personal care needs such as toileting, feeding, dressing, and repositioning throughout the school day.
- Interprets students' needs and other pertinent information from subtle expressions of sound, physical orientation, gesture and facial expression.
- When fulfilling the role of a one-to-one assistant, additionally focuses attention, as appropriate, on an individual student, in keeping with that student's delineated goals, objectives and instructional profile.
- Follows procedures and policies set forth by the Hospital and Day School Administration.
- Helps foster a safe, stimulating, supportive and non-threatening learning atmosphere, maintaining an appropriate balance between freedom and control, and creating a feeling of trust and openness with students.
- Demonstrates care and responsibility in endeavors and communicates effectively as a team member.
- Communicates constructive and critical information regarding student needs, student performance and school-related activities to the homeroom Special Education Teacher in a professional and timely manner.
- Assists the Special Educator in organizing classroom space and resources for maximum utility and safety.
- Assists in proper maintenance of all educational and student personal care materials and equipment.
- To ensure safety, assists students in disembarking school transportation vehicles and entering school and later in re-boarding vehicles at school dismissal.
- Applies appropriate judgment in maintaining a safe, healthy and effective learning environment, on the school campus and in the community.
- Identifies the need for assistance in working with students and appropriately seeks help or advice in a timely fashion.
- Demonstrates appropriate regard for arrival, departure and appointment schedules.
- Takes on new assignments and shares responsibilities fairly.
- Shares ideas and insights with colleagues in a constructive and timely manner and uses other professionals as resources.
- Lifts and transports students weighing up to 150 pounds, using safe body mechanics.
- Strives to increase skills as a member of the school faculty.
- Participates in workshops, conferences and meetings.
- Fulfills continuing education requirements that may pertain to the position, whether mandated by statute or instituted by Day School Policies.
- Responds constructively to supervisory direction.
