Teacher Assistant

Reports to: Building Principal Work coordinated by: Classroom teacher(s)

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Hold or be eligible to obtain a valid Illinois Paraprofessional Educator License (ELS-PARA) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education ISBE), which requires one of the following: Completion of at least 60 semester hours of college coursework; An associate degree or higher from an accredited institution; or A qualifying score on the ETS ParaPro Assessment, as established by ISBE

General Responsibilities:

Assists certified special education staff in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) by providing instructional, behavioral, communication, social-emotional, functional, and personal care support to students with disabilities. Supports students in accessing instruction in the least restrictive environment while promoting independence and dignity.

Duties:

  • Supports students in accessing the general education curriculum and educational environment through the implementation of accommodations, modifications, and specialized supports identified in the IEP.
  • Provides individualized or small-group instructional support to students with disabilities as assigned.
  • Assists students with organization, communication, mobility, behavior regulation, sensory needs, and functional skills as identified in their IEPs.
  • Provides personal care, feeding, toileting, lifting, positioning, and health-related support when required by student needs and district procedures.
  • Implements behavior intervention plans (BIPs), safety plans, and positive behavior supports under the direction of licensed staff.
  • Collects and documents data related to IEP goals, behavior plans, and student progress.
  • Assists students in using assistive technology, augmentative communication systems, adaptive equipment, and specialized instructional materials.
  • Supports students during inclusion, community-based instruction, vocational training, transportation transitions, and other educational activities identified in the student's IEP.
  • Promotes student independence, self-advocacy, confidence, and social-emotional development by providing positive reinforcement and only the level of support necessary for student success.
  • Assists licensed staff with evaluations, observations, progress monitoring, and other IEP implementation activities as assigned.
  • Supports students during classroom instruction, transitions, emergency drills, assemblies, lunch, recess, community-based instruction, vocational activities, field trips, and other school activities.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding student records and disability-related information.
  • Communicates observations regarding student performance, behavior, health, safety, and other significant concerns to supervising staff in a timely manner.
  • Participates in required training related to disabilities, behavior supports, crisis prevention, student health procedures, and district initiatives.
  • Maintains active supervision of assigned students and follows district procedures to promote student safety at all times.
  • Implements positive behavior supports, Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), de-escalation strategies, and other student support procedures in accordance with student plans, district policies, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Complies with all applicable district policies and procedures and local, state, and federal laws governing the performance of assigned duties.
  • Reports concerns involving student safety, accidents, injuries, theft, property damage, or other significant incidents to the appropriate supervisor immediately.
  • Arrives on time and fulfills assigned responsibilities throughout the workday.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the principal or designee that are consistent with the position.
