Job Description

The Tax Managing Director is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations, and acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. The role involves communicating potential risks, analyzing changes in tax policy, making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies, supervising engagement teams, and participating in marketing, networking, and business development.

Job Duties

  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensure client compliance while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensure self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
    • Manage engagements to achieve engagement management metrics.
    • Practice hands‑on client service delivery.
    • Encourage teams to adhere to TQM policies, including engagement letters and documentation.
  • Research
    • Identify when research is needed, frame issues, and report analysis concisely.
    • Identify complex issues for the engagement team and provide research methodology.
    • Act as technical reviewer of WTAs in the area of expertise.
  • ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
    • Apply Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
    • Use expertise in income tax provisions for international tax, valuation allowance credits, business combinations, and stock‑based compensation.
    • Review and apply income tax provisions efficiently.
  • Tax Consulting
    • Develop and recommend efficient methods to maximize client benefits and reduce taxes.
    • Apply expert knowledge of combining tax and business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions.
    • Use general knowledge of multiple tax specialties (e.g., International, SALT, Estate Planning) for issue identification and resolution.
  • Tax Specialization
    • Develop in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more taxation areas.
    • Maintain expert knowledge of standard application.
    • Recognize as industry expert in a specialized field of taxation.
    • Advise clients on tax implications, recommend alternatives, and identify compliance methods.
  • Strategy Development
    • Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve client, firm, or personnel positions.
    • Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients as required.
  • Other duties as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise associates, senior associates, and managers as appropriate.
  • Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments.
  • Act as career advisor to associates, senior associates, and managers.
  • Schedule and manage workload of associates, senior associates, and managers.
  • Provide verbal and written performance feedback.

Education

Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • 10 or more years of relevant tax experience or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services.
  • Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience required.
  • CPA, Attorney, or IRS Enrolled Agent (or equivalent) required.

License / Certifications

  • CPA certification, Attorney admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction, or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) required.
  • Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.

Software

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software.

Salary Ranges

  • California: $190,000 – $335,000
  • Colorado: $185,000 – $225,000
  • Illinois: $175,000 – $250,000
  • Maryland: $185,000 – $260,000
  • Massachusetts: $215,000 – $300,000
  • Minnesota: $170,000 – $250,000
  • New Jersey: $190,000 – $350,000
  • Ohio: $150,000 – $300,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $230,000 – $350,000
  • Washington: $196,400 – $249,400
  • Washington DC: $190,000 – $300,000
