Job Summary
The Tax Managing Director is responsible for applying industry specific knowledge to advise clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, the Tax Managing Director applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy, and makes top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. The Tax Managing Director is a critical member of the office/region leadership team, involved in direct supervision as a final or secondary reviewer under the partner, and actively participates in marketing, networking and business development within an area of expertise while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions.
Job Duties
- Tax Compliance
- Ensures that clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and that self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual ("TQM").
- Manages engagements to achieve engagement management metrics.
- Practices hands‑on client service delivery.
- Encourages team adherence to TQM policies (including engagement letters, documentation, etc.) to ensure overall client service.
- Research
- Identifies when research is needed; frames issues clearly and concisely; and reports the analysis.
- Identifies complex issues to be researched by the engagement team and provides an efficient research methodology.
- Acts as technical reviewers of WTAs in an area of expertise, as applicable to the role.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
- Applies Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48 proactively and correctly.
- Expertise in income tax provisions in international tax, valuation allowance credits, business combinations, and stock‑based compensation issues.
- Reviews and applies income tax provisions efficiently.
- Tax Consulting
- Develops, recommends, and implements efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes.
- Combines tax knowledge with business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions and maximize results.
- Uses general knowledge of multiple tax specialties (International, SALT, Estate Planning) for issue identification and resolution.
- Tax Specialization
- Develops an in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more areas of taxation (individual, corporate, property, sales, pass‑through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits).
- Has expert knowledge of application of standards.
- Recognized as an industry expert in a specialized field of taxation.
- Uses expertise to advise clients on tax implications, recommend alternative courses of action, and identify compliance methods.
- Strategy Development
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel (e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non‑tax benefits).
- May be required to present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients, depending on the specific role.
- Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Ability to supervise associates, senior associates and managers as the situation dictates.
- Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments.
- Acts as a Career Advisor to associates, senior associates and managers.
- Schedules and manages workload of associates, senior associates and managers.
- Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates, senior associates and managers.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
Experience
- Ten (10) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
License/Certifications
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent ("EA") (or an equivalent designation) required.
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
Software
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.
California Range: $190,000 - $335,000
Colorado Range: $185,000 - $225,000
Illinois Range: $175,000 - $250,000
Maryland Range: $185,000 - $260,000
Massachusetts Range: $215,000 - $300,000
Minnesota Range: $170,000 - $250,000
New Jersey Range: $190,000 - $350,000
Ohio Range: $150,000 - $300,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $230,000 - $350,000
Washington Range: $196,400 - $249,400
Washington DC Range: $190,000 - $300,000
