Job Description
Tax Manager, State and Local Tax is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, recommending alternative courses of action, and identifying compliant methods to meet tax regulations. The Manager will engage in marketing, networking, and business development within their area of expertise, recognize policy changes, and apply new regulations to compliance work. The role collaborates with Core Tax Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide state and local tax (SALT) expertise to clients.
Job Summary
The Tax Manager will oversee comprehensive SALT matters, manage client relationships, lead tax research, analysis, and strategy development, and supervise a team of SALT professionals. Key responsibilities include delivering research, compliance, consulting, controversy, and technology support for multi‑state clients.
Job Duties
Research
- Identify complex situations requiring research, outline issues, and determine appropriate sources.
- Analyze researched facts and sources prior to preparing detailed reports.
- Develop relationships with in‑state and out‑of‑state Department of Tax/Revenue personnel.
Tax Compliance
- Conduct detailed reviews of tax returns to identify significant state issues.
- Compose responses to notices from state authorities.
- Provide assistance with exam support.
Tax Consulting
- Draft tax memorandums, opinions, and related documentation on various tax issues.
- Apply all applicable SALT sub‑specialties and confer with other tax professionals when appropriate.
- Determine the tax planning process and manage engagement letters and engagement work.
- Assist in developing consultative selling strategies and manage client expectations.
Tax Controversy
- Represent clients before tax authorities on contested issues.
Tax Related Software
- Utilize GoSystems, tax research databases, and other tax‑related software to complete assigned tasks.
Tax Specialization
- Provide technical client service to multi‑state companies with state and local tax issues.
- Negotiate settlements, voluntary disclosure agreements, and represent clients in state tax audits.
- Draft technical memoranda addressing state and local tax matters.
Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS 109
- Prepare tax accrual workpapers.
ASC 740‑10
- Apply industry standards, firm policies, and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements related to FAS 109, FIN 48, FAS 5 for sales tax, and unclaimed properties.
Strategy Development
- Review tax implication studies to identify alternative actions benefiting clients.
- Develop new or improved ideas to advance the firm’s or client’s position, reduce taxes or expenses, and offer non‑tax benefits.
- Assist with researching potential tax strategies.
- Suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise day‑to‑day workload of SALT Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns; review work product.
- Ensure all team members are trained on relevant tax software.
- Evaluate performance, assist in goal setting, and deliver performance feedback.
- Act as career advisor to SALT Senior Associates and Associates as appropriate.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required; business focus preferred.
- Master’s degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferred.
Experience
- Four (4) years of prior state and local/multistate or legal professional services experience, or equivalent through an advanced degree program.
- Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis.
- Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions preferred.
- Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships preferred.
License/Certifications
- CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred.
Software
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word.
- Exposure to standard tax applications and research tools preferred.

Salary Range
National: $79,800 – $168,000
Maryland: $79,800 – $168,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $79,800 – $168,000
Washington DC: $79,800 – $168,000
