Tax Manager - Hybrid
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager to lead and manage tax compliance and planning engagements in a hybrid work environment. The Tax Manager will oversee a portfolio of individual, partnership, and fiduciary returns, guide and mentor staff, ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, and deliver proactive tax strategies to clients. This role is ideal for a hands-on tax professional with public accounting experience who is comfortable working both remotely and in-office to support client needs and firm initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage tax engagements from planning through delivery, including preparation and review of individual (1040), partnership (1065), and fiduciary (1041) tax returns.
- Provide technical tax research and interpret federal, state, and local tax law to ensure compliance and minimize client tax liabilities.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop tax staff; delegate work, conduct performance reviews, and provide training on technical tax topics and software.
- Review and sign off on tax returns and supporting schedules, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to firm standards and deadlines.
- Coordinate and communicate with clients to gather documentation, explain tax positions, and present tax planning recommendations.
- Serve as a generalist resource across a range of tax matters; elevate complex issues and collaborate with specialty teams as needed.
- Manage client relationships, including engagement staffing, timelines, billing, and expectations, and support business development efforts.
- Represent clients before taxing authorities when necessary, including responding to notices and participating in examinations.
- Leverage tax software, technology, and workflow tools to improve efficiency and maintain accurate records.
- Stay current with tax law changes, continuing education requirements, and industry best practices, and share knowledge with the team.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Masters in Taxation or similar advanced degree is a plus.
- Active CPA license or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation required or actively pursuing designation; prior holders of either are strongly preferred.
- Minimum 5-7 years of public accounting tax experience with a strong background preparing and reviewing 1040, 1065, and 1041 returns.
- Proven experience as a Tax Manager or senior tax professional with supervisory responsibilities.
- Demonstrated generalist tax knowledge with the ability to handle diverse client types and industries.
- Strong technical tax research and problem-solving skills, with familiarity interpreting federal, state, and local tax codes.
- Excellent communication and client-facing skills, with proven ability to explain complex tax concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Proficiency with tax preparation software and Microsoft Office; experience with practice management and document management systems preferred.
- Ability to work in a hybrid model, including periodic in-office presence for team collaboration and client meetings, and flexible remote work for focused project tasks.
- High attention to detail, strong organization skills, and commitment to meeting deadlines and firm quality standards.
