Gross Mendelsohn, one of the Mid-Atlantic’s leading independent CPA and advisory firms, is seeking an experienced Tax Manager to join our growing Tax Department.This is a highly visible client-facing leadership role responsible for managing tax compliance and advisory engagements for closely held businesses, high-net-worth individuals, and growing middle-market companies. The Tax Manager will bring strong technical expertise in federal and state taxation, along with the ability to manage client relationships, oversee engagement teams, and deliver thoughtful tax planning strategies.The role includes oversight of tax return preparation and review, engagement management, and mentoring tax staff. This role offers the opportunity to work with sophisticated clients while helping to shape the future of the firm’s tax practice.Key ResponsibilitiesClient Engagement & Technical Tax LeadershipPrepare and review complex federal and state tax returns including Forms 1040, 1065, 1120-S, and 1120Provide technical guidance on tax compliance and planning matters for business and individual clientsResearch and interpret tax law to address complex tax issues and identify planning opportunitiesDevelop tax strategies that help clients optimize tax positions while maintaining complianceEnsure accurate and timely preparation and filing of client tax returns through the firm’s tax systemsClient Relationship ManagementServe as a primary point of contact for assigned tax clientsBuild and maintain trusted relationships with business owners, executives, and individualsParticipate in client meetings and planning discussionsCommunicate complex tax matters clearly and professionallyIdentify opportunities to expand services and support long-term client relationshipsEngagement ManagementOversee all aspects of tax engagement planning, scheduling, and workflow managementManage engagement teams and delegate responsibilities effectivelyEnsure projects are completed efficiently while maintaining high standards of qualityMonitor engagement progress and proactively address issues affecting deadlines or deliverablesStaff Development & LeadershipMentor and develop tax staff through coaching, training, and ongoing feedbackReview staff work and provide technical guidanceSupport staff growth through knowledge sharing and professional developmentParticipate in performance evaluations and team development initiativesFirm Engagement & Professional DevelopmentStay current on changes in tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirementsShare technical insights and relevant tax updates with colleagues and clientsSupport firm growth through professional organizations, community involvement, and networkingDemonstrate and promote the firm’s Mission, Vision, and ValuesBachelor’s degree in accounting, taxation, or related fieldCurrent CPA license requiredMaster’s degree in taxation preferred5+ years of progressive tax experience in public accountingExperience preparing and reviewing complex individual and business tax returnsStrong knowledge of federal and multi-state tax compliance and planningExperience supervising staff and managing tax engagementsRequired Skills and CompetenciesTechnical ExpertiseStrong knowledge of federal and state tax compliance and planningAbility to research and interpret complex tax issuesExperience with tax software, research platforms, and financial systemsClient Service & Professional SkillsExcellent verbal and written communication skillsStrong client service mindset with the ability to build trusted relationshipsAbility to translate complex tax matters into practical guidance for clientsLeadership & CollaborationCollaborative mindset with the ability to work independently and as part of a teamStrong organizational and time management skillsAbility to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environmentWhy Join Gross Mendelsohn?Join a respected independent firm committed to strategic growthWork with a diverse portfolio of middle-market and high-net-worth clientsEnjoy a collaborative, team-oriented cultureCompetitive compensation and comprehensive benefits packageFree parking at both Baltimore and Fairfax locationsHybrid work flexibilityWork EnvironmentThis role offers a hybrid work environment.
