Tax Director

Location: Chicago, IL (Hybrid)


Our client is a rapidly growing private equity-backed organization with domestic and international operations. The company is seeking a strategic Tax Director to lead all aspects of tax planning, compliance, reporting, and risk management while partnering closely with executive leadership and PE sponsors to support growth initiatives, acquisitions, and operational excellence.

Position Summary

The Tax Director will oversee the company's global tax function, including U.S. federal, state, and international tax matters, tax provision reporting, compliance, planning, and tax strategy. This individual will serve as a key advisor to executive leadership, supporting M&A activity, organizational restructurings, and international expansion initiatives. The ideal candidate will combine deep technical tax expertise with strong leadership and business partnership skills, particularly within a private equity-backed environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of domestic and international tax compliance, planning, and reporting.
  • Manage the quarterly and annual ASC 740 tax provision process, including effective tax rate analysis, deferred tax calculations, uncertain tax positions, and related financial statement disclosures.
  • Oversee U.S. federal, state, local, and international income tax filings and compliance requirements.
  • Develop and implement tax-efficient strategies to support business growth, acquisitions, restructuring initiatives, and global operations.
  • Partner with executive leadership, private equity sponsors, finance, legal, treasury, and operations teams on strategic business initiatives.
  • Lead tax due diligence, structuring, and integration efforts for acquisitions and divestitures.
  • Manage transfer pricing policies, international tax planning initiatives, and cross-border transactions.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess impacts on the organization.
  • Oversee tax audits and serve as the primary point of contact with external auditors, tax advisors, and taxing authorities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, leverage technology, and strengthen internal controls across the tax function.
  • Build, mentor, and develop a high-performing tax team.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • CPA required; MST or JD/LLM in Taxation preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive tax experience, including a combination of public accounting and corporate tax leadership experience.
  • Strong expertise in ASC 740 tax accounting and provision reporting.
  • Significant experience with domestic and international tax matters.
  • Experience within a private equity-backed, multinational, or complex corporate environment.
  • Strong knowledge of corporate tax planning, tax compliance, transfer pricing, and M&A tax structuring.
  • Experience managing global tax audits and working with external advisors.
  • Proficiency with tax compliance and provision software, ERP systems, and advanced Excel.
  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to influence executive leadership and investors.


Preferred Experience

  • Private equity portfolio company experience.
  • Global manufacturing, distribution, industrial, or business services industry experience.
  • Experience supporting acquisitions, carve-outs, and post-acquisition integrations.
  • Exposure to international tax reporting, foreign tax credits, transfer pricing, and global entity structures.
  • Experience leading teams through periods of rapid growth, transformation, or ERP implementations.
