Tax Controversy Manager - National Tax Office (JD Required)

Job Description

We are looking for a Tax Controversy Manager willing to drive positive changes, manage IRS examinations, appeals and other tax controversy matters. You will support both nationally and locally, helping clients achieve tax compliance with timely responses, penalty abatements and strategic solutions.

Responsibilities

• Assist with IRS examinations and appeals, including responses to Information Document Requests and Notices of Proposed Adjustments, and preparation of appeals protests
• Prepare penalty abatement requests and relief requests for missed elections
• Address collection matters including installment agreements, offers in compromise and collection due process hearings
• Perform tax research and draft tax memoranda on broad federal tax issues
• Contact the IRS Service Center and correspond on various tax account issues
• Assist with training programs and thought‑leadership publications
• Mentor staff members

Basic Qualifications

• JD required
• Pass any state bar exam
• 5+ years experience in tax controversy

Preferred Qualifications

• LLM or Master’s in Taxation
• Judicial clerkship or government experience and/or accounting background
• CPA certification7+ years of experience
• Strong technical tax research skills
• Excellent written, oral communication, and time‑management skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a national team

For Minnesota and Illinois the expected salary range is $120,000–$160,000; other locations may vary.
