The Tai Chi Instructor is responsible for leading safe, engaging, and inclusive Tai Chi classes for participants of varying ages and fitness levels. Instruction may be provided on land, in the water, or from the pool deck while participants perform movements in the water, ensuring a safe and effective class experience. This position fosters a positive environment that supports participant wellness, learning, and personal growth while representing the recreation program with professionalism and enthusiasm.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and lead Tai Chi classes that incorporate proper technique, breathing, balance, and mindful movement
- Teach in a manner that prioritizes participant safety, offering modifications and guidance for all ability levels.
- Provide clear instruction, demonstrations, and verbal cues to support participant progress.
- Create a welcoming, encouraging, and community-oriented atmosphere.
- Arrive prepared and on time for all scheduled classes.
- Ensure the gym space is set up appropriately and returned to order after each session.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and follow facility policies and procedures.
- Report any incidents, injuries, or equipment needs to the Recreation Manager promptly.
- Stay current on Tai Chi instruction methods, trends, and best practices.
- Must be 18 years old.
- Strong understanding of safe movement practices and body alignment.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and motivational skills.
- Ability to work with participants of diverse ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels
- No education requirement - All levels welcome
- Prior experience teaching Tai Chi and fan.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in Tai Chi instruction or related mind–body disciplines. Specifically looking for those certified in Dr. Paul Lam Tai Chi.
- Experience within a community recreation or fitness center environment.
- Work may occur in environments with poor acoustics, distractions, or high activity levels.
- Some tasks will be performed in wet, humid, or damp environments, such as pools or aquatic facilities
Physical Activities:
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Requires the ability to demonstrate movement, stand for extended periods, and assist participants safely.
