PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to provide plumbing services with specific responsibility for identifying repair and/or replacement needs, installing, repairing, replacing, and/or upgrading plumbing systems, waste water systems, and ensuring compliance with accessibility and health and safety codes; ensuring completion of projects in accordance with trade standards; providing information on the proper uses of equipment; assisting other skilled trades; ensuring that tools and materials are available at job site; perform preventative maintenance (PM) programs, inspections, and repairs; and performing additional tasks as assigned by supervisor or general foreman.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Analyzes blue prints, schematics, and drawings of plumbing systems for the purpose of determining the efficient installation of new or upgraded systems.

• Coordinates with assigned Foreman and/or other trades for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently.

• Diagnoses causes of problems and/or failures in plumbing for the purpose of identifying repair and/or replacement needs.

• Informs personnel regarding procedures and/or status of work orders for the purpose of providing information for making decisions, taking appropriate action, and/or complying with building and safety regulations.

• Inspects buildings and facilities for the purpose of evaluating condition, identifying necessary repairs, and recommending preventive maintenance.

• Installs and repairs plumbing systems and fixtures (e.g. hot water heaters, drinking fountains, commodes, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, water softeners, etc.) for the purpose of providing enhanced and/or upgraded capabilities. Repairs and installs pumps as needed. Must have knowledge of proper pipe sizing to ensure proper water pressure.

• Maintains vehicle, tools, and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition.

• Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.

• Prepares written materials (e.g. repair status, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.

• Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items required to complete the necessary installation and/or repair.

• Responds to emergency situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns including, but not limited to, clogged drains, broken water lines, frozen pipes, gas odors, and possible gas leaks. Evaluate situation and take proper corrective action.

• Transports a variety of tools, equipment, and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.

• Troubleshoot, repair, inspect, and maintain plumbing equipment, including but not limited to faucets, lavatories, toilets, flush valves, sinks, water heaters, drinking fountains, domestic water heaters and boilers, garbage disposals, backflow devices, valves, and water meters.

• Perform preventative maintenance inspections and repairs in district facilities including, but notlimited to, domestic water systems and related devices and sanitary waste drainage.

• Repair or replace waterlines, domestic recirculation lines, and sewer lines.

• Install new plumbing fixtures including, but not limited to, sinks, commodes, urinals, faucets, drinking fountains, garbage disposals, domestic water heaters, and related devices.

• Maintain and repair all natural gas services.

• Recommend repair needs to potentially eliminate ongoing and future repairs.

• May assist other trades with piping and repair issues.

• Winterize facilities (i.e. stadiums).

• Assembles, installs, and repairs pipes, fittings, and fixtures of all water and sewer systems, including those below the level of the building, according to specification and plumbing codes. Installs valves, pipe insulation, air chambers, and other devices as needed. Assist HVAC personnel in repair and installation of heating/cooling water system piping when needed.

• Reviews all work requests to ensure work is being completed in timely manner and inform foreman of possible delays. Determines materials needed for project and ensure documentation such as invoices and work orders are properly maintained.

• Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains; may weld holding fixtures to structural members; maintains all grease traps.

• Inspects and maintains backflow prevention devices.

• Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

• Operates a motor vehicle to conduct work activities.

• Performs general clerical tasks, which may include answering telephone calls, typing documents, copying documentation, sending/receiving faxes, processing incoming/outgoing mail, or filing documents/records.

• Skills are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in skilled trades, power and hand tools, etc.; adhering to safety practices; handling hazardous materials; and planning and managing projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must have a high school diploma or GED. Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee driver's license. Experience as a commercial or residential plumber is preferred.

Technical Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities : Must be able to speak and understand English; must have adequate skills to operate a personal computer and keyboarding skills; must have ability to follow Board of Education policies, Director of Schools policies, directives from Supervisor and/or general foreman, and follow all departmental procedures. Must have ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.

Physical Ability : Tasks require the ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk to job sight and around work areas, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear, taste smell. Must be able to frequently lift up to fifty pounds and occasionally lift up to one hundred pounds. Job involves carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of up to one hundred pounds.
Sensory Requirements : Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Must be able to see clearly at twenty inches or less and at distances of twenty feet or more; must have ability to identify and distinguish colors; good peripheral vision and depth perception; must have adequate ability to adjust focus in order to successfully perform duties.
Environmental Factors : Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature extremes, machinery, traffic hazards, or bright/dim light. May have to work in high precarious places and around fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals; may work in extreme cold or heat. Must be able to work in a moderate level of noise.
