Provides surgical technology to direct and indirect care and service. Assist surgeon, performs operative/invasive procedures. Serves as a resource to other technologists, trains new technologists, trains students and function as an informal lead technologist role as needed. Mentoring and utilizing the additional education gained through certification will be used to assist peers, perform more efficiently and raise performance.

Qualifications

  • License/Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Education: Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology or Certificate of Completion in Surgical Technology
  • Other Knowledge/Skills: proficiency with surgical instruments, equipment, and sutures; ability to set up sterile fields; knowledge of surgeon preferences and techniques; critical thinking and problem solving; effective communication and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation for surgeon specific operative/invasive procedures that’s timely, accurate, effective and efficient.
  • Ensure instruments, equipment, and sutures are appropriate, complete and functional.
  • Set up sterile field and be scrubbed prior to patient entering the room.
  • Set up case so that another can step into an organized back table.
  • Have appropriate "have available" items.
  • Use resources wisely, avoid unnecessary opening.
  • Perform motions that are fluid and not redundant.
  • Set‑up time for a variety of case types is within acceptable range.
  • Aware of and is prepared for case needs, i.e. two Mayo’s.
  • Collaborate with surgeon prior to case and adjust as necessary.
  • Precept surgical technologists and RNs to prepare for surgeon specific procedures.
  • Scrub on simple to complex procedures for a variety of specialties.
  • Run Mayo independently.
  • Aware of surgeon’s techniques and preferences.
  • Adapt style to match surgeon and procedures.
  • Confident and competent during routine and emergency procedures.
  • Prepare for sequencing, i.e. clamp, cut, tie.
  • Anticipate and provide so that attention needs not be diverted from the operative field.
  • Attentive to case, pays attention to subtle cues and responds appropriately.
  • Pro‑active identification of needs: avert need to have someone run for things.
  • Observe technique of self and others and intervene appropriately.
  • Perform in first scrub, first assist, and second scrub roles.
  • Perform case closing activities such as dressing application, transfer and turnover.
  • Teach RNs to scrub on a variety of cases.
  • Plan, anticipate and provide for expected and unexpected intra‑op events.
  • Anticipate and provide appropriate and timely intervention for intra‑op case changes (e.g., lap to open, uncontrolled bleeding, perforation).
  • Actions and behavior are calm, confident, and steady.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected and use resources wisely.
  • Anticipate problem‑prone and/or high‑risk procedures and provide for needs.
  • Observe for induction and maintain quiet.
  • Protect patient privacy by own actions and remind others.
  • Precept/Mentor staff and students in planning for surgical events.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills and job knowledge that will raise performance as well as teach others observation/knowledge.
  • Be available for on‑call hours outside of schedule work‑hours, including after‑hours, weekend, and holidays; respond within the timeframe as defined by departmental needs.
  • Able to adhere to assigned weekly, weekend, and holiday call shifts in accordance with hospital policies and protocols.
  • Communicate and collaborate with others.
  • Serve as a resource of knowledge and share knowledge as appropriate.
  • Count timely and actions reflect clear understanding of dual responsibility with circulating RN.
  • Communicate needs non‑verbal and verbally in a timely and appropriate manner: urgent vs. routine.
  • Precept staff in an appropriate manner; mentor positively.
  • Articulate priority of needs clearly.
  • Listen and observe for cues indicating changing needs.
  • Conversation is appropriate for setting.
  • Address issues/concerns appropriately.
  • Contribute to successful unity operations by integrating individual efforts with unit needs, goals and objectives.
  • Participate in required call.
  • Flexible with respect to assigned area(s).
  • Assist others as needed or requested.
  • Actions and behaviors foster team: share knowledge and ideas.
  • Attempt to resolve conflicts constructively.
  • Perform a variety of activities to ensure an efficient effective unit.
  • Collaborate with others to ensure appropriate instruments, specialty cards and equipment are available for cases.

Compensation & Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $22.75 per hour – $37.99 per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
