Position Summary

The Surgical Technologist is an essential member of the surgical team, ensuring appropriate selection, preparation, and sterility of instrumentation and equipment necessary to contribute to a positive outcome for the surgical patient. They are responsible for assisting the team by scrubbing in on general OR cases.

Position: Surgical Technologist • Department: Operating Room • Schedule: Per Diem – Full Shift (8+ hours, day shift starting at 6:30 a.m.)

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

  • Perform scrub duties according to procedure, demonstrating a high level of skill, efficiency, and surgical consciousness.
  • Work closely with the entire surgical team to facilitate and coordinate exceptional, efficient, and quality patient care.
  • Participate in staff meetings and in‑service presentations.
  • Accountable for accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments before, during, and after procedures.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of national patient safety goals.
  • Act as preceptor for staff members for all aspects of the OR.
  • Maintain collegial behavior of respect and consideration with regard to the work environment (e.g., restocking rooms, returning equipment/supplies, cleaning work areas, station, and communication as appropriate).
  • Maintain an aseptic technique to preserve a sterile environment.
  • Anticipate the instruments/equipment the surgeon will need next.
  • Assist in turnover of rooms and prep the OR for patients.
  • Actively participate in the "Time Out", giving full attention to the process and speaking up if something does not seem right, stopping the line until there is resolution.
  • Hold retractors and complete additional tasks at the surgeon’s request during the procedure.
  • Handle tissue specimens obtained for laboratory analysis.
  • Organize and restock the OR following the surgical procedure.
  • Work effectively as part of a team, maintaining good relationships with surgeons and other employees.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing in English.

Job Requirements

Education: Accredited Surgical Tech Program, Associate’s Degree or above.

Certifications, licenses, registrations required: ARC/STSA‑Accredited Surgical Technology Program; or NBSTSA Certification; or meet the Massachusetts Surgical Technologist Law certification grandfather requirement (employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility on or before July1,2013).

  • 1‑3 years of experience as a Surgical Technician in an acute‑care setting.
  • Per Diem – Full shift required.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation Range: $33.08 – $49.15 per hour. Base pay is determined by education, experience, and licensure/certifications relevant to the position.
