The position assists surgeons and other surgical staff during procedures. The Technologist works under the supervision of a surgeon, registered nurse, or other surgical personnel and maintains constant vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field to maximize patient safety. The position ensures that the operating room environment is safe and needed equipment is available. The Surgical Technologist assists in the sterile processing department by performing sterilizing, assembly and storage of medical supplies and surgical equipment.Essential ResponsibilitiesPreoperative ResponsibilitiesPrepare the operating room for surgical procedures by:Performing room setup according to procedure and surgeon preferenceEnsuring all required instruments, supplies, and equipment are available and functionalVerify sterility, integrity, and expiration dates of supplies and instrumentsPerform surgical hand scrub, don sterile attire, and maintain aseptic techniqueAssist with patient positioning, skin preparation, and drapingAnticipate surgical needs based on procedure, surgeon preference, and patient conditionIntraoperative (Scrub) ResponsibilitiesMaintain a sterile field throughout the surgical procedurePass instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies accurately and efficientlyAnticipate the surgeon’s needs to ensure smooth procedural flowAssist with:RetractionSuctioningHandling of specimensPerform sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating nurseIdentify and correct breaks in sterile technique immediatelyOperate and troubleshoot sterile equipment as neededPostoperative ResponsibilitiesAssist with wound closure and application of dressingsParticipate in final surgical counts and reconciliationSafely handle and label specimens according to policyPrepare instruments for decontamination and reprocessingAssist with room turnover for subsequent proceduresPatient Safety and Infection PreventionAdhere to:AST GuidelinesInfection prevention protocolsUniversal precautionsMaintain vigilance for patient safety concerns during proceduresReport equipment malfunctions or safety hazards promptlySupport surgical time-outs and verification processesEquipment and Supply ManagementEnsure proper use, care, and handling of surgical instruments and equipmentIdentify missing, damaged, or malfunctioning equipmentAssist with inventory control and case cart accuracyCommunicate supply needs to appropriate personnelCommunication and TeamworkCollaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and support staffCommunicate clearly and professionally in a high-stress environmentRespond appropriately to emergent situationsDemonstrate situational awareness throughout proceduresDocumentation and ComplianceDocument counts, specimens, and required procedural data as assignedFollow organizational policies, regulatory standards, and scope of practiceParticipate in quality improvement and patient safety initiativesOther ResponsibilitiesPerform all other related duties as assigned in a professional and responsive mannerDemonstrate the ability to use relevant equipmentSupport, understand, and promote Alomere Health’s mission, vision, values, policies and proceduresAbility to meet the work schedule requirements with flexibility dependent upon the needs of the departmentFoster respectful working relationships with professional colleagues, patients, families, and general public regardless of age, gender, lifestyle, culture, beliefs, race, socioeconomic class, or abilityRequired QualificationsSurgical Technologist CertificationPreferred QualificationsExperience in a similar roleAssociate degree in the field of surgical technologySupervisory ResponsibilitiesMentor and orient new staff membersMay supervise Student Scrub TechniciansKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesStrong knowledge of current operating room techniques, procedures, instruments, and suppliesUnion PositionNo
