Job Summary
Operating Room: Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse performs a variety of technical and routine tasks to facilitate the care of the patient undergoing surgery.
Labor & Delivery: The Surgical Technician assists in the care of patients in the Labor and Delivery area and the Obstetrical Operating Room, which includes the care, preparation, and maintenance of sterile and un‑sterile supplies and equipment. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse is responsible for performing individually assigned patient care activities based upon established patient care policies and procedures and routine tasks essential for upkeep of obstetrical area.
Responsibilities
Operating Room
- Assist Registered Nurse with patient care activities in the operating room.”
- Maintain the integrity of the aseptic environment.
- Document and report information such as sponge count and specimens retrieved.
- Deliver direct/indirect patient care in all specialties.
- Develop and modify an individualized plan of care for each surgical patient in conjunction with the RN.
- Comply with institutional and regulatory policies and procedures for the operation advanced technology.
- Participate in annual competency assessment.
Labor & Delivery
- Observe psychosocial, cultural, spiritual and physical condition of patient and/or changes in condition; report observations.
- Perform routine phlebotomy obtaining specimens for laboratory testing.
- Perform blood glucose testing and quality controls.
- Assist the Registered Nurse with support of the patient and family throughout labor, delivery and recovery.
- Maintain the L&D O.R. (instruments and supplies in ready condition); set‑up and break down O.R. as needed.
- Scrub for cesarean sections.
- Provide instruments, sutures and other sterile supplies; pass instruments; keep account of instruments and needles used.
- Notify surgeon and circulating nurse if an instrument or needle is not intact when removed.
- Assist in preparing closing counts with circulating nurse.
- Assess and restock supplies in LDR’s, OR’s and supply room; facilitate ordering of supplies as necessary.
- Asses fetal monitor equipment; maintain appropriate cables.
- Perform complete or partial patient hygiene.
- Obtain, measure and document non-invasive vital signs, intake and output as directed.
- Complete and document unit’s equipment checks; report problems or malfunctions to Nursing Manager or Charge Nurse.
- Assist in transporting patients.
- Assists with basic clerical functions such as telephone answering and entering orders into computer.
- Compile Obstetrical procedures and itemize coding for charge entry.
- Function as a receptionist when required – meet and greet patients and families.
- Performs other duties as directed by the RN, including duties on the Mother/Baby Unit.
Qualifications
- Operating Room: 1‑2 years experience preferred.
- Labor & Delivery: 1 year patient care and OB experience preferred.
- Certified Surgical Technologist – National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting upon hire required.
- BLS – American Heart Association upon hire preferred.
