Surgical Technologist II OR
A Surgical Technologist II in the Operating Room (OR) is a certified medical professional with advanced experience and skills who actively assists surgeons during surgical procedures by preparing the sterile field, handling instruments and supplies, monitoring patient vital signs, and maintaining a safe and sterile operating environment, often taking on more complex responsibilities compared to a standard Surgical Technologist I role; requiring a high level of technical proficiency, strong attention to detail, and the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team during complex procedures.
Participates in the delivery of individualized peri-operative registered nursing care under the supervision and guidance of a licensed physician or a registered professional nurse. Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to assure quality patient care.
- Basic knowledge of instrumentations.
- Establish/Maintain sterile field and assure team maintains sterile environment.
- Demonstrates correct and safe instrumentation passing.
- Participants in surgical counts (sponge, needle and instruments), per policy
- Adheres to Policy and Procedures, all regulatory standards and Patient Safety Goals.
- Participates in the nursing process for patients of all ages served.
- Participates in unit educational activities.
Qualifications
Education: High school graduate or equivalent required. Successfully completed an accredited surgical technologist training program and holds a current credential as a certified surgical technologist from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor. Or, has successfully completed a training program for surgical technology during the person's service as a member of any branch of the armed forces of the United States.
Experience: None required.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Certification in Surgical Technology required. LPN licensure required for grandfathered employees. Obtain and/or maintain registration with the VA Dept of Health Professions.
Life Support: Must obtain/maintain AHA BLS-HCP.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Satisfactory completion of structured orientation program.
