Job Summary

Geisinger offers a Surgical Technologist position with a$7,500 hiring incentive for eligible candidates, competitive pay rates, up to$5/hr shift differential for evening, night and weekend shifts, and up to$40,000 in financial support to pursue nursing certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in surgical operations and prepare operating rooms for surgery.
  • Perform sterilization and supply of equipment.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including washing incision sites.
  • Pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and nurses during surgery.
  • Coordinate care in the operating room.
  • Prepare operating room supplies and equipment as indicated by surgeon preference cards.
  • Practice aseptic techniques while preparing for surgery—scrubs, applying surgical gown, gloving, draping, and setting up the instrument table.
  • Participate actively in surgical time‑and‑out and operating room briefing according to the universal protocol.
  • Identify the correct surgical site with the circulating registered nurse and surgeon before incision.
  • Maintain an accurate account of supplies, including sponges, needles, and instruments.
  • Verify instrument counts with the circulating nurse at the end of the procedure.
  • Prepare, identify, and verify all specimens obtained during the surgical procedure.
  • Follow Universal Protocol standards in the operating room.
  • Identify and report any concerns or observations that may impact patient care to the circulating registered nurse.
  • Contribute to problem resolution by offering effective options, alternatives, and solutions.
  • Adhere to all policies, protocols, and standards of care.
  • Participate in Joint Commission‑mandated educational programs.
  • Ensure all medications and solutions are labeled under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Work is typically performed in a clinical environment, ensuring compliance with all organization policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate from a specialty training program (required).
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year of related work experience (required).
  • Certifications: Basic Life Support Certification; Certified Surgical Technologist from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
  • Skills: Clinical policies and standards, effective communication, preceptor skills, teamwork.
