Job Requirements

The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) collaborates with the surgeon and the health care team to perform a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. The CSFA works in collaboration with and at the direction of the surgeon during the intraoperative experience. The CSFA’s assist does not concurrently function as a scrub tech; the CSFA may take a scrub role when not needed as a first assistant.

Scope of Practice

  • Handle tissue
  • Provide exposure
  • Use instruments
  • Suture
  • Provide homeostasis

The CSFA may not access the patient’s chart for pertinent information, participate in auto‑transfusions, or participate in pre‑surgical or post‑operative care of the patient.

Education & Training

  • Certification in CSFA
  • Documentation of proficiency in the role of a scrub technician for major surgeries
  • Ability to apply principles of asepsis and infection control
  • Knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and operative technique for all operative procedures in which the CSFA is required
  • CPR certified
  • Ability to behave appropriately in stressful and emergent situations
  • Ability to recognize safety hazards and initiate corrective action

Work Orientation & Experience

Successful experience as a CSFA for a minimal of a year is preferred, or a minimal two‑year duration in an operating room that provides care to major orthopedic cases.
