The Surgical Tech First Assist (ST‑FA) is a surgical technology role that provides advanced, hands‑on support during surgical procedures, assisting surgeons with exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical tasks while ensuring patient safety and surgical efficiency.

Position Details

  • Department: Operating Room
  • Status: Full‑Time | 40 hours/week
  • Shift: Days (4 days / 10‑hour shifts) with call

Responsibilities

  • What You’ll Do
    • Assist surgeons with exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical tasks.
    • Function as a Surgical Technologist as needed.
    • Anticipate surgeon preferences and patient needs (sutures, specialty supplies, instrumentation).
    • Ensure implants and specialized equipment are available and functioning properly.
    • Monitor patient status and respond to potential complications.
  • Teamwork & Communication
    • Serve as a vital clinical resource within the OR.
    • Promote a collaborative, respectful, team‑oriented environment.
    • Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia, nursing, and OR staff.
    • Coordinate workflow to support smooth, efficient surgical cases.
  • Commitment to Safety & Aseptic Excellence
    • Maintain strict sterile field integrity and infection prevention standards.
    • Identify and communicate potential risks for surgical site infections.
    • Perform and model proper hand scrubs and OR attire compliance.
    • Safely handle, contain, and transport contaminated instruments and supplies.
    • Participate in point‑of‑use cleaning and contamination control.
  • Growth, Learning & Leadership
    • Complete ongoing education to maintain competency and certification.
    • Assist with onboarding and mentoring coworkers and students.
    • Attend hands‑on training and equipment in‑services.
    • Participate in evaluating new products, procedures, and quality initiatives.

Scope Limitations

  • Administering or injecting medications for local anesthesia or sedation.
  • Inserting urinary catheters.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least 2 years of full‑time scrub experience in routine and complex cases.
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
