Reports to: Surgery Department Director
Exempt Status: Non‑exempt
Position Purpose
All employees are expected to perform their tasks in a manner that supports our vision of providing high‑quality clinical care and respectful patient service. The Surgical Technologist handles instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures, maintains the sterile field, and works under the direction of the physician, Unit Manager, and Chief Nursing Officer. The role adheres to the organization’s Behavioral Expectations, promoting courtesy, respect, privacy, communication, responsiveness, teamwork, professionalism, and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess procedures using preference cards and pull cases for the upcoming day.
- Identify body structures, functions, and common disorders.
- Communicate effectively with surgeons and team members to prepare cases per physician preferences.
- Plan and prepare instrumentation and equipment for each case.
- Provide care in accordance with established standards and policies, maintaining confidentiality.
- Deliver nonjudgmental, non‑discriminatory care to patients and families.
- Practice positive team‑building activities and interactions.
- Use time efficiently and complete additional duties as needed.
- Identify and respond to emergency situations, applying sound judgment to correct them calmly.
- Apply aseptic principles and differentiate sterilization methods for special equipment.
- Demonstrate dexterity with surgical instruments and knowledge of step‑by‑step procedures.
- Understand anesthetic agents to provide intelligent patient care.
Education & Training
- Maintain current knowledge in Surgical Technology and attend required in‑service training.
- Keep up‑to‑date with unit activities through staff meetings and documented attendance.
- Complete Annual Mandatory Hospital Program update.
Qualifications
Education: Graduate of a Surgical Technology school or similar training.
Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Certified Surgical Technologist.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Capable of lifting 50–75 pounds, with combined lift of 150 pounds.
- Able to care for patients with infectious diseases.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods.

- Category I: Routine potential for exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues, including burns and cuts.
