The Surgical Technologist assists in preparing the operating room and performing assigned support duties during operative procedures. The incumbent scrubs in the role of second or third assistant when directed.

What you will do

  • Assist in preparing the operating room, providing intraoperative care to patients, and performing assigned support duties during operative procedures within established standards and practices.
  • Check supplies, instrumentation, and equipment needs for operative procedures and ensure they are working properly.
  • Provide sterile field; maintain linen, supplies, and instruments needed for successful completion of scheduled procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation, draping, and positioning of patients for procedures.
  • Participate in the post‑operative cleanup of the OR room and restock of the surgical area.
  • Scrub and assist circulators under direct supervision of RN for operative procedures, including prepping and draping of the operative site as needed.
  • Assist surgical team during operative procedures as assigned and directed, following established standards and practices.
  • Prepare patient or operative site; maintain and monitor aseptic technique throughout operative procedures.
  • Observe progress of procedure, anticipate patient needs, and obtain supplies promptly to avoid delays.
  • Scrub in as second or third assistant when directed; count sponges and sharps with RN prior to surgery and before incision is closed.
  • Prepare sterile dressing and assist with application of dressing and casts.
  • Assist in the preparation of operative specimens for analysis.
  • Participate in resuscitation procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide care, maintain clinical competency, and meet age‑specific patient needs required within the department.
  • Work effectively with staff to coordinate and implement activities; communicate surgeon’s preferences to RN circulator and/or appropriate individuals and document/update on preference cards.
  • Follow established organization and departmental policies and procedures; maintain required department records, reports, and files for administrative and compliance purposes.
  • Adhere to established department policies, procedures, objectives, compliance, and quality improvement with consideration given to risk management, infection control, and patient safety practices.
  • Complete required continuous training and education, including department‑specific requirements.
  • Assist with care and maintenance of department equipment and utilize supplies in a cost‑effective manner; report equipment malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Assist in orientation of new staff members and students when they provide patient care, treatment, and services as part of their training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

  • High School education or equivalent (Required).
  • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). (Required).
  • Completion of a program for surgical technology accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). (Required).
  • Completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technologists in an armed force or at a CAAHEP accredited hospital or ambulatory surgical treatment center program. (Required).
  • Successfully complete the surgical technologist NBSTSA certifying exam. (Required).
  • Current CPR/Basic Life Support certification (Required).
  • At least one year experience in patient care obtained through completion of an ORT or surgical technology program or related (Required).
  • Compliance with Tennessee statutory requirement: completion of 15 continuing education credits annually (effective July 1, 2003) unless exempt as a Certified Surgical Technologist.
  • Employees may be grandfathered under TN Code Ann. 68‑57‑102(a) for those who began training or were employed as a surgical technologist prior to May 21, 2007 for at least 18 months in a hospital, medical office, surgery center, or school.
