Surgical Technician - In House Agency - St. Mary

Job Summary

This role is typically a 12‑week assignment and is responsible for ensuring the availability of equipment and supplies for endoscopy and surgical procedures. The technician must competently scrub for surgical procedures and assist with endoscopy procedures, in addition to performing other duties assigned by the RN.

Education & Certifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from an accepted course in surgical technology.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
• Preferred: Certification in surgical technology.

Experience

• 1 year of experience in a similar medical setting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Expertise in sterile and aseptic techniques.
• Knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, instruments, and technologies.
• Basic analytical skills.
• Proficiency in computers, software, and web‑based applications.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals in the patient care process.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including 24/7, weekend, holiday, and on‑call availability.

Job Duties

• Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, respecting privacy and tailoring communication style.
• Organize activities and supplies based on the surgery schedule and daily departmental needs.
• Competently care for and provide services to patients, adjusting service level to age and developmental stage under staff nurse supervision.
• Communicate patient‑care information to patients, family members, and co‑workers.
• Maintain required clinical knowledge, technical skills, training, and credentials.
• Adapt to rapid changes in the department caused by unit census, patient acuity, and resource availability.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the RN.

Physical Demands

The role requires the ability to lift 50 to 100 pounds occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds frequently, and 10 to 20 pounds constantly. The job exceeds the demands of sedentary work and may involve walking, standing, and routine pushing or pulling of objects.

Biological / Environmental Hazards

The incumbent works in a patient‑care area and is exposed to blood, body fluids, tissue, communicable diseases, hazardous medications, and hazardous waste. The risk level may increase with exposure to bodily fluids and contaminated waste handling.
