Job Summary

The position prepares operating rooms for surgery, using appropriate techniques, and provides technical services and assistance in other areas as assigned. The role assists in nursing care and preparation of the surgical patient, performing scrub duties and related procedures, and provides assistance in emergency procedures as well as scheduled and emergency cases.

Responsibilities

  • Use the written individualized Physician Preference card for the surgical procedure.
  • Coordinate with the circulating nurse to provide supplies, equipment, and instruments for the designated surgical procedure, adhering to proper sterile technique and conducting and documenting sponge, instrument, and needle counts and operating room time‑out procedures.
  • Recognize, intervene, and report any changes in the patient's status in a timely manner, promptly answering the patient's needs and requests pre‑operatively and intra‑operatively.
  • Use a working knowledge of current surgical scrub technology and medical terminology.
  • Work with the circulating nurse to continuously assess case progress and patient safety, utilizing appropriate charging mechanisms and assisting with recovery of lost charges.
  • Other related job tasks or responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Special Skills: Excellent customer service skills and basic computer skills.
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Education: High school graduate or equivalent GED for all current employees; completion of a formal ORT program for all new hires.
    • Experience: Thorough knowledge and experience in operative procedures, equipment, and instrumentation.
    • Licensure/Certification: CPR.
  • Preferred Requirements:
    • Experience: One year of hospital/surgical background or experience.
    • Certification/Registration: Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technology course.
