Overview

The Surgical Technologist (ST) performs technical functions to assist in the delivery of patient care within the Operating Room or other areas of the hospital as assigned. The ST provides assistance to other health care providers such as Registered Nurses, anesthesia staff, surgeons and other professionals. The primary role is to perform in the scrub role during surgical procedures and to ensure availability of all sterile supplies, instrumentation, and equipment. The ST may provide orientation/training to new team members, participate in very complex cases, and drive process improvement (PI) projects to completion.

Responsibilities

  • Perform in the scrub role during surgical procedures and ensure availability of sterile supplies, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Assist other health care providers, including Registered Nurses, anesthesia staff, and surgeons.
  • Provide orientation and training to new team members.
  • Participate in very complex cases.
  • Drive PI (process improvement) projects to completion.

Education

  • Minimum Level of Education Required: High School Diploma or GED
  • Area of study or major: Surgical Technology
  • Preferred educational qualifications: Diploma; Associate Degree in Surgical Technology; Military Training; five or more years of experience without a degree
  • Type of degree: N/A
  • Position specific testing requirement: N/A

Licensure/Certification/Registration

  • Current CPR is required.
  • Certified as a Surgical Technologist under the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist by graduating from a CAAHEP-accredited program and passing a national certification examination (CST), or certification under the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) preferred.
