The average number of cases performed daily is 1-3, depending on the case. Common cases include open hearts (CABG, valves, aneurysms), thoracotomies, VATS, convergent procedures, AAA, carotids, ION robotic cases, ECMO, and Impella 5.5. Staff must be willing to float to the floor as a 1:1 sitter.
This is done to supplement hours during low case volumes. A Charge Nurse is available for all shifts from 7 am to 11 pm, Monday through Friday, and from 7 am to 7 pm on weekends. The schedule is created by the CV team lead and may require adjusting based on case needs. Weeknight call is required 3-4 times per week and weekend call every other to every third weekend.
Holiday call is rotating and candidates must be willing to work during holidays. Response time to call is 15 minutes, with 8-hour reprieve shifts for post-call. A sleep room is available, and housing should be accessible nearby. Candidates must be willing to cross-train to other OR specialties if CV volumes are low.
Refusing to float may result in supplemental time off without pay. The department promotes a family atmosphere. RTO must be submitted upfront; no additional RTO requests will be approved after submission. Four to five days of unit-based orientation and two buddy call shifts are included, with flexibility based on recent heart experience.
