The Surgical Technologist assists the surgical team with the preparation and performance of surgical procedures in the operating room. Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining a sterile field, preparing surgical instruments and supplies, passing instruments and medications to surgeons, assisting with patient transportation, maintaining equipment and supplies, and supporting the surgical team throughout procedures.
Job Requirements
Education & Work Experience:
- High School Diploma/GED or equivalent: Required
- Associate's Degree/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience: Preferred
- Operating Room experience and/or formal training course: Preferred
Licenses & Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification from an approved vendor: Required
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential: Required in Hawaii within one year of hire
Essential Functions
- Prepare surgical cases by verifying and assembling required supplies, instruments, and equipment.
- Set up and maintain sterile fields using strict aseptic and infection-control practices.
- Pass instruments, supplies, and medications to surgeons during procedures.
- Perform instrument, sponge, needle, and blade counts with the RN per established standards.
- Label solutions and collect required surgical case data.
- Clean and maintain surgical equipment, facilities, supplies, and inventory.
- Transport patients according to unit schedules and priorities.
- Complete required clerical and documentation tasks.
- Perform housekeeping and other job-related duties as assigned.
