Substitute Security Officer

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested candidates to apply for the position of Substitute Security Officer. The Substitute Security Officer shall be responsible for protecting the safety and welfare of students and school personnel in accordance with policies of the Board of Education as set forth in approved Administrative Regulations.

To serve as the responsible person in school buildings to provide for the safety and welfare of students and school personnel under the direction of the Principal and the Chief Security Officer. To actively assist in supervising general department in corridors, lunchrooms, restrooms and school grounds during the hours in which schools are in session. To maintain decorum and order on school grounds and in the vicinity of schools and at schools and Board of Education events as directed by the Principal or Chief of Security. To carry out administrative procedures necessary in maintaining safety and welfare including liaison with public safety officials and school officials. To monitor the buildings at all times, including the monitoring of lavatories periodically during the day. To comply with the strict regulation against sitting down and socializing. To respond promptly to the signal for calling the Substitute Security Officer. To assume the authority of special officer of the City of Camden during those hours and/or at such events when actually working and on duty carrying out the responsibilities of an employee of the City Board of Education. To maintain record of incidents. To present written descriptive reports for major incidents. To perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum requirements include health and physical characteristics suitable for law enforcement duties, a high school diploma or equivalent, and a required criminal history background check, physical, and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.

Physical demands include sitting, standing, walking, speaking, and hearing for extended periods for various tasks. Use hands and arms to reach, handle, and operate tools, computers, or controls. Lift and carry items necessary for job performance. Use close, color, peripheral, and depth vision, and adjust focus as needed.

Environmental conditions include possible exposure to a range of childhood and adult illnesses, occasional exposure to varying weather conditions, work performed in heated, air-conditioned, ventilated facilities, moderate to high at times, noise level especially during school hours, assemblies or events, frequent interruptions from calls, walk-ins and urgent requests, possible exposure to cleaning agents, instructional materials, and equipment-related chemicals.

Reports to the Office of Safety and Security Management Team and the School Principal. Evaluated by the Office of Safety and Security Management Team and the School Principal. Salary: CEA Union Affiliation $118.13 per diem. Employment period: Part-time (on call). Residency requirement: Under New Jersey's "New Jersey First Act" (N.J.S.A. 52:14-7), all employees of New Jersey public school districts must maintain bona fide New Jersey residency as a condition of employment. Candidates must already reside in New Jersey or establish residency within the required timeframe after hire. Current employees who were hired on or before September 1, 2011 are exempt from this requirement and may continue to reside outside the state. In limited circumstances, applicants may request a residency waiver through the state's Employee Residency Review Committee if they can demonstrate critical need or hardship; approval is not guaranteed.
