Instructional Assistant

Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc., to assist teachers in evaluating students' progress and/or recognizing the student's individual needs. Assists teachers in implementing and/or modifying lesson plans. Confers with teachers, parents, and/or appropriate personnel to assist in evaluating students' progress and/or implementing students' objectives. Implements reading, math, and/or subject-specific programs to meet students' individual needs. Other Job Functions: Assists other personnel as may be required to support them in the completion of their work activities. Maintains students' files, records, etc. to ensure the availability of items as may be required. Monitors individual students, classroom, library, and/or playground activities to provide a safe and positive learning environment. Participates in various meetings to share information and/or improve one's skills/knowledge. Performs record-keeping and basic clerical functions, such as scheduling, copying, etc., to support the teacher in maintaining student files and providing classroom materials.

Job Purpose Statement/s: The job of "Instructional Assistant" is done for the purpose/s of assisting (under direct supervision) in the supervision and instruction of students, implementing instructional programs and/or modifying lesson plans, and relieving teachers of clerical tasks.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of assisting teacher in evaluating students' progress and/or recognizing the individual needs of the student.
  • Assists teachers for the purpose of implementing and/or modifying lesson plans.
  • Confers with teachers, parents and/or appropriate personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing of students' objectives.
  • Implements reading, math and/or subject specific programs for the purpose of meeting the individual needs of students.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Maintains student's files, records, etc. for the purpose of ensuring availability of items as may be required.
  • Monitors individual students, classroom, library, and /or playground activities for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in various meetings for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skills/knowledge.

Job Requirements - Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge to perform basic math including fractions, percents, and ratios; to read a variety of manuals; write correspondence, memos, reports, etc. usually in prescribed formats, and/or speak before groups in English; to apply common sense understanding of detailed multi-step instructions in a combination of written, oral and diagrammatic form.

Skills to perform multiple basic non-technical tasks. Specific skills to administer appropriate assessment instruments and techniques; communicate with persons of varied cultural and educational backgrounds; operate standard office equipment; prepare and maintain accurate records.

Abilities to deal with a level of complexity of tasks that require significant interaction with persons and/or requests that frequently change. Specific abilities to adhere to safety practices; be attentive to detail; implement established curriculum; meet deadlines and schedules; work under time constraints; be flexible.

Responsibility: In relationship to – Overall scope of responsibility is moderate and work is subject to some review and checking.

Working Environment – The job functions are generally performed in an inside environment with the requirement to have the following significant physical abilities: stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; reaching, handling, and/or feeling; sensory speaking, hearing and visual.

Licenses, Certifications, Testing Requirements: Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance; Tuberculosis clearance, Drivers License

Requirements / Qualifications:

High school diploma or the equivalent, and. Two years of college (48 units), or. A. A. degree (or higher), or. Pass a local assessment of knowledge and skills in assisting in instruction.
