May work at any school, building, facility or campus within the Lake Station Community Schools, Lake Station, Indiana.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ensure a clean and safe facility (inside and/or outside). This position performs custodial tasks in an area or areas assigned by the lead custodian, assists in maintaining and repairing physical structures of school buildings, and maintaining school grounds at an exemplary level. The grounds and the facility must look clean and be safe at all times.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND EXPECTATIONS OF THE POSITION:
  1. Provide a clean and safe environment for students, staff and visitors.
  2. Act in a manner that reflects the high standards of the School Board and community, is knowledgeable, courteous and a goodwill ambassador for the school corporation.
  3. Dress in an appropriate and professional manner according to assignment.
  4. Comply with Board policy, and the directives of Head Custodian, School Principal and/or Director of Maintenance.
  5. Assist the custodial staff with routine maintenance.
  6. Assist custodians in the areas that have special events or that occasionally have special needs.
  7. Follow safe practices and appropriate guidelines for general cleaning of the classrooms, bathrooms, halls, offices, shops, open area, commons, library, gym area, and general duties as outlined and/or assigned by Head Custodian.
  8. Maintain school grounds to include lawn maintenance and snow removal so that the outside of the building is a credit to the community.
  9. Perform all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Employee must demonstrate the skills and abilities listed below. Must have good moral character and ethical code. Serves as a role model for students and adults. Can take direction and has organizational skills. Is self-directed and enjoys working with people.
Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma or GED and custodial experience.
Wage rate: $15.00 / hour or more depending on experience (substitute) depending on experience.
Language Skills: Adequate verbal and written language skills. Ability to read and interpret documents including, but not limited to, operation and maintenance manuals. Ability to write routine reports and complete necessary paperwork.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform four basic operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to prioritize tasks, solve problems, and carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form.
Other Skills and Abilities: General computer operational skills. Ability to perform duties and demonstrate awareness of district requirements and policies.
Physical Demands: The employee may be required to do some heavy lifting and moving of equipment and objects. The employee must be physically active and coordinated to be able to access all areas of the building and property to troubleshoot, access, and/or repair equipment and buildings. Must be able to lift objects weighing 50 pounds or more.
Working Environment/Conditions: Responsibilities are completed in varied settings throughout the facilities and property. The work environment can be noisy, hot, cold, dirty, with exposure to acid chemicals. The work is completed in all types of working and climate conditions.
The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.
