Position Type: Part-Time, Contract – potential to transition to Full-Time

Job Summary

MTI/DTC is developing a new Plumbing Technology diploma program and is seeking an experienced, licensed plumbing professional to serve as a contract Subject Matter Expert (SME). The SME will review and advise on curriculum content and sequencing, lab facility and equipment planning, and state licensure and union requirements as the program is built, filed for accreditation, and prepared for launch. This is a remote, part-time engagement of approximately 5–15 hours per month, with heavier involvement during peak periods such as ACCSC filing review and lab buildout, and potential to grow into a full-time role – such as Lead Instructor or Program Director – as the program matures and additional campuses adopt it.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Review draft curriculum, course descriptions, and learning objectives for technical accuracy, sequencing, and alignment with current industry practice.
• Advise on the scope and depth of instructional content across core plumbing competencies: drain-waste-vent (DWV) systems, water supply systems, fixtures, and gas/specialty systems.
• Recommend adjustments to hands-on lab exercises and skills checklists to reflect real-world job-ready standards.
• Provide feedback on assessment methods and competency benchmarks.

Facility & Equipment Planning

• Advise on lab layout, station count, and workflow to support hands-on skill development at program scale.
• Review and recommend tools, fixtures, pipe/material stock, and equipment needed to outfit a working plumbing lab.
• Identify safety requirements and code-compliance considerations for lab and shop spaces.

Regulatory & Industry Compliance

• Advise on state-specific plumbing licensure requirements, apprenticeship hour credit, and pathways to licensure in MTI/DTC's operating states (Mississippi, Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, and others as programs expand).
• Flag state-level variation in continuing education, exam eligibility, and reciprocity that may affect graduates.
• Advise on union apprenticeship structures, journeyman/master progression, and local union (UA-affiliated) rules and expectations, particularly in markets with strong union presence.
• Support responses to accreditor (ACCSC) or state regulator questions related to industry alignment and workforce readiness.

Qualifications

• Strong working knowledge of plumbing codes, systems, and field practices across DWV, water supply, fixtures, and gas/specialty systems.
• Working knowledge of plumbing licensure requirements in at least one of MTI/DTC's target states (Mississippi, Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri).
• Familiarity with union apprenticeship pathways and journeyman/master requirements; direct union experience strongly preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfort reviewing curriculum and technical documents.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a remote, part-time consulting capacity.
• Commitment to industry-current, job-ready training standards.

Education and Experience

• Active Master Plumber license, or Journeyman license with substantial field experience, in good standing.
• Minimum 8–10 years of hands-on plumbing/trade experience; residential and commercial experience preferred.
• Prior experience teaching, training, mentoring apprentices, or reviewing curriculum is a plus but not required.
• Availability for periodic virtual meetings and asynchronous document review.
