As a City of Flagstaff Streets Operations Technician I, you'll be part of a dedicated team that takes pride in keeping the community safe, connected, and moving every day of the year. Working alongside experienced professionals, you'll help maintain and improve critical transportation infrastructure through sign installation, pavement markings, concrete repairs, street lighting, traffic signals, street sweeping, pavement preservation, snow operations, and emergency response.

Safely operates streets equipment (6/10-wheel truck, cinder and plow units, front end loader, and heavy-duty equipment)Safely and efficiently operates more advanced equipment including combination tractor-trailer, transport, motor grader, asphalt paving equipment, water truck and/or advanced striping machinery, and other right of way maintenance tools and equipmentActively aids and supports a training program aimed at promoting acquired skills to other employeesWorks independently and provides verbal and written instructions to othersReads, implements, and completes work ordersMaintains and tracks monthly reports, reviews engineering plans and performs construction walk-throughsSets up safe traffic control work zones and applies proficient knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) typical work zone applicationsApplies and enforces proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety in work areaTracks work performed to help establish and meet performance standardsEnters data into worksheets and asset management software for tracking performance and standardsPrepares monthly reports and tracks expenditures for developing and meeting performance standardsReviews and implements engineering plans related to Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) specifications and City of Flagstaff engineering standardsProvides input and participates in budget and planning processesMaintains city street sign and markings inventory, orders, receives, and stocks materials accordinglyOperates a forklift and transport supply truck as neededForms, places, and finishes concrete products; primarily curb/gutter and sidewalk panelParticipates in snow operations and other Streets section activities as assignedApplies vegetation management best practices and follows all safety precautionsResponsible for initiation and follow-up of blue stake measuresProvides training to others in a leadership role and provides mentorship to others in the Streets sectionWorks independently regarding, and training others, on fabrication, installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signs and markings (stop signs, one-way signs, directional signs, street name signs, delineators, markers, symbols, etc.)Assists supervisor in recommending and adjusting job instructions to adapt to terrain/materials; determines needs and schedules equipment for major maintenance; counsels and advises staff in Streets section workAssists direct supervisor in supervising day-to-day work activities for labor/equipment/materialsTracks work performed and train others to track work performed to help establish and meet performance standardsAssists with Cartegraph performance system for assigned section as needed including oversight of computer entry and work report uploadsOther duties as assignedIn addition to the job functions above, when assigned to Right-of-Way:Mows and/or mitigates medians, parkways, shoulders, and other right-of-way areas to maintain visibility and general appearanceTrims trees and shrubs to maintain required clearance for equipment, vehicles, pedestrians, signs, traffic signals, and streetlightsRemoves or trims vegetation that obstructs driver visibility at intersections, crosswalks, curves, and drivewaysClears vegetation from around traffic signs, signals, guardrails, and delineators to ensure visibility and functionalityPerforms mechanical, cultural, or approved herbicide-based weed control to reduce invasive or nuisance vegetationIdentifies dead, diseased, damaged, or structurally compromised trees that could pose a risk to the public or infrastructureRemoves overgrown brush, fallen limbs, and vegetative debris from rights-of-way to improve safety and accessibilityIdentifies, monitors, and controls invasive plant species that threaten native vegetation, infrastructure, or maintenance operationsRemoves or trims vegetation encroaching onto sidewalks, shared-use paths, ADA ramps, and pedestrian corridors to maintain safe and accessible travelUses hand or small equipment shoveling of snow in right-of-way areasProvides support of special event related to right-of-way maintenance needs for area appearanceQualificationsHigh School Diploma or General Equivalency DiplomaOne (1) year of experience as a laborer in semi-skilled crafts involved in construction, building, or landscaping tradesOne (1) year of equipment operation experienceValid driver's licenseDESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAININGValid Arizona Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)Traffic control training or certificationsExperience operating a dump truck, snowplow, loader and heavy-duty truck, or other right of way maintenance tools and equipmentAmerican Backflow Prevention Testing & Repairs, Certified Arborist, Certified Tree Worker, Aerial Lift Specialist, Master Gardener, and Structural Pest Control License in Right of Ways and Weeds certifications (Right of Way assignment)Working knowledge of irrigation systems and associated repairs (Right of Way assignment)Other Requirements and Working ConditionsMust possess, or obtain within six (6) months, a valid Arizona Class B CDLMaintains effective working relationships with internal and external customers and co-workersRegular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuityStreet maintenance operations often require alternating work schedules, the operator must be flexible to accommodate these work schedulesActively participates in snow operations and other streets related duties as assignedMust be able to operate and maintain various grounds related equipment, power tools, and small engines (mowers, line trimmers, blowers, snow blowers, chainsaw, etc.)All Emergency Service Employees shall maintain their principal residence within the state boundaries of Arizona.
