Store Manager Responsibilities

Lead the entire operation of a Ross store, ensuring Company standards and best practices are consistently met. Staff, train, and develop the leadership team and Associates to achieve desired sales and profitability while maintaining a friendly, easy‑to‑shop environment. Manage stockroom, front end, and sales floor operations so that new merchandise reaches the floor promptly and expenses are controlled through best practices.

Essential Functions

  • Lead Company best practices and maximize productivity by eliminating unnecessary steps.
  • Analyze store reports to evaluate controllable expenses and overall performance.
  • Address variances to Company standards with appropriate action plans, partnering with the District Manager as needed.
  • Ensure proper scheduling of Associates to meet business objectives.
  • Accept special assignments as directed by Leadership.
  • Administer payroll, including daily punch edits, scheduling compliance, Sunday payroll transmission, and reporting.

Organizational Development

  • Recruit, hire, train, and develop Assistant Managers, Area Supervisors, and non‑exempt Associates.
  • Utilize and promote retention tools—bonus programs, recognition, contests—to reduce turnover.
  • Address personnel and performance issues via coaching, warnings, progressive discipline, and termination as required.
  • Ensure compliance with Ross personnel policies and all State, Local, and Federal regulations.
  • Consult with the District Manager on Associate Relations issues.

Expense Control

  • Lead all expenditures to remain within budget.
  • Control payroll hours as primary controllable expense.

Safe & Secure Environment

  • Maintain adherence to Company safety policies and protect Associates and Customers.
  • Ensure Associates understand and execute emergency operating procedures.

Customer Service

  • Treat all Customers, Associates, and leaders with respect.
  • Demonstrate courtesy, friendliness, and professionalism.
  • Execute Customer Service and Merchandise Presentation programs through training and supervision.
  • Coach Retail Associates to provide efficient, friendly service at registers, the Customer Service desk, fitting rooms, and sales floor.

Personal and Store Brand

  • Model professional appearance in line with the Company Dress Code and reinforce it at all times.
  • Represent and support the Company brand at all times.
  • Maintain a clean, neat, easy‑to‑shop environment.
  • Maintain high housekeeping standards with maintenance personnel and Associates.

Merchandise Processing & In‑Store Marketing

  • Ensure recovery, sizing, and markdowns meet Company standards through instruction and follow‑up.
  • Present merchandise per Company merchandising guidelines.
  • Urgently manage merchandise processing to the sales floor within expected Company timeframe.

Loss Prevention

  • Train Associates on Loss Prevention programs to meet store shortage goals.
  • Demonstrate integrity and honesty; safeguard confidential information, cash, and merchandise.
  • Maintain a strong Customer Service presence on the sales floor and drive Loss Prevention awareness.
  • Lead the annual inventory process and execution of inventory guidelines.
  • Monitor mark‑out‑of‑stock policy for correct administration.

Qualifications and Special Skills Required

  • Five or more years of store management experience in retail.
  • High level of Customer service.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and communicate positively to Associates at all levels.
  • Ability to train, coach, and develop Associates.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills; develop schedules and execute to achieve results.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Exercise considerable independent judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.

Physical Requirements / ADA

  • Use all store equipment (PDTs, registers, PCs).
  • Stand, walk, and move around store 100% of working time.
  • Regularly bend at the waist, squat, kneel, climb, carry, reach, and stoop.
  • Occasionally push, pull and lift more than 25 lb.
  • Use janitorial equipment, rolling racks, ladders and other assigned supplies.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations common in retail.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Direct supervision of Assistant Store Manager, Area Supervisors, and all Retail Associates.

Compensation And Benefits

The base salary range for this role is $57,790–$97,300, varying with experience, qualifications, and location. Benefits include Accident, Critical Illness, Vision, Auto, Home, and Pet insurance, Associate Discount, Identity Protection, Benefit Hub Discount Mall, Employee Assistance Program, Commuter Benefits, 401(k) (service requirements), Employee Stock Purchase Program, Ross Cares Fund, College Discounts, Sick Pay (where required), and Referral Bonuses. Full‑time and exempt positions also receive medical/dental/vision health insurance, legal insurance, vacation buy, FSA, HSA, life/ADDI insurance, long‑term disability, enhanced maternity/parental leave, accrued vacation at 15 days/year, and 9 company holidays. Associate, Assistant Store Manager, Store Manager, and exempt corporate/buying roles may receive performance‑based bonuses.
