Stationary Engineer
Compensation: $49.96 per hour
Position Summary
The Stationary Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of campus mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and building automation systems. The position supports the University's educational, research, clinical, and residential operations by ensuring critical building systems remain operational, performing preventative maintenance, responding to emergencies, and maintaining a safe and comfortable campus environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Operate, inspect, troubleshoot, maintain and repair HVAC, plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems.
- Monitor and optimize BAS.
- Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on chillers, boilers, pumps, cooling towers, AHUs, fan coil units, motors and associated equipment.
- Support research laboratories and critical environments.
- Complete work orders using CMMS.
- Coordinate contractors.
- Respond to emergencies and participate in on-call rotation.
- Improve reliability and energy efficiency.
- Follow OSHA, EPA, NFPA and University safety requirements.
Conditions of Employment

Required Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED; five years of commercial/institutional maintenance experience; Stationary Engineer License or equivalent; EPA Universal Certification (or within 180 days); valid Illinois Driver's License.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, BAS controls, CMMS, Microsoft Office, troubleshooting, communication and customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in higher education, healthcare or research facilities; BAS experience; OSHA certification; additional trade certifications.
Typical Physical Demands & Working Conditions
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending and lifting up to 75 pounds while working indoors, outdoors and in mechanical spaces. Participation in an on-call rotation is required.
