Staff Robotics Software Engineer R&D & Deployment- Massachusetts

$180,000–$250,000 + Equity

Build the software that makes advanced robotics work in the real world.

We're partnering with an ambitious robotics technology company developing intelligent robotic systems for demanding real-world environments.

They're looking for a Staff Robotics Software Engineer to take a leading technical role across the software stack, from robotics algorithms and system architecture through to production deployment.

This is not a role for someone who wants to own one small component of a larger system.

It's an opportunity for an experienced engineer to tackle some of the hardest problems in robotics, influence architecture and technical direction, and see their work move from development into real-world operation.

The Opportunity

As a Staff Engineer, you'll have significant autonomy and technical ownership.

You’ll work alongside experienced engineers across robotics, software and hardware, helping solve problems where conventional approaches aren’t enough.

Your work could involve:

  • Designing and developing software for sophisticated robotic systems
  • Improving motion planning, control and system performance
  • Working with perception, sensing and machine learning systems
  • Developing reliable software infrastructure around robotic platforms
  • Solving challenging integration problems between software and hardware
  • Improving system reliability, observability and performance
  • Building tools and infrastructure that enable engineers to develop and deploy robotics software more effectively
  • Diagnosing difficult issues in deployed systems and driving them through to resolution
  • Shaping software architecture and engineering practices as the platform evolves

The exact problems will change. The expectation is that you'll be someone who can identify the important problem, understand it deeply, and drive the solution from idea through to production.

What Makes This a Staff-Level Role?

You’ll be expected to operate beyond your individual area of expertise.

That means influencing architecture, raising engineering standards, mentoring other engineers, and helping the team make good technical decisions when the path forward isn’t obvious.

You’ll have the freedom to move between areas of the stack where your experience can have the greatest impact.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys being the engineer brought into the room when a problem is particularly difficult.

What We're Looking For

You'll likely have:

  • Significant professional experience developing software for robotics, autonomous systems, industrial automation, embedded systems or related physical systems
  • A strong track record of delivering complex technical projects
  • Excellent software engineering fundamentals
  • Strong experience with Python, C++, or both
  • Experience developing software that interacts directly with physical robotic or automated systems
  • The ability to reason across algorithms, software architecture and system-level behaviour
  • Experience taking ownership of ambiguous technical problems
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving ability
  • Excellent communication and the ability to influence technical decisions across disciplines
  • A track record of mentoring engineers and raising the technical capability of a team

Experience with areas such as robotic manipulation, motion planning, optimisation, perception, computer vision, machine learning, distributed systems, embedded software or robotics infrastructure would be particularly relevant.

You don’t need to have worked across every one of these areas.

We’re more interested in depth, engineering judgement and the ability to tackle unfamiliar problems than ticking every box on a technology list.

The Environment

This is a hands‑on engineering environment where software ultimately has to work on real machines.

You’ll work closely with engineers from different disciplines and will have visibility from early technical decisions through to deployment and operation.

There is plenty of scope to influence:

  • Technical strategy
  • Development tooling
  • System reliability

The team values engineers who are comfortable taking ownership, making decisions and getting close to the underlying technical problem.

This Could Be a Great Fit If...

  • Solving problems that don’t have an obvious answer
  • Working across software and physical systems
  • Having meaningful technical ownership
  • Building rather than maintaining
  • Moving between high‑level architecture and low‑level technical detail
  • Working with highly capable engineers
  • Seeing your work operate outside the labHelping shape how a growing engineering organisation builds products

If you’re looking for a role where you can have a genuine technical impact rather than simply owning another software component, this is worth a conversation.

What You’ll Get

  • Significant technical ownership and autonomy
  • The opportunity to influence architecture and engineering direction
  • Exposure to challenging robotics and software problems
  • Close collaboration with experienced engineers across multiple disciplines
  • The chance to work on systems that operate in the physical world
  • A high‑growth environment where individual contribution has visible impact
  • Competitive compensation and equity participation
