Staff Pharmacist PRN - Pediatric Inpatient

Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is seeking a PRN Staff Pharmacist to join our Clinic Pharmacy team!

Position Highlights

• Clinic hours are 6:30am – 5:00pm weekdays and 7:00am – 3:30pm weekends, with variable 8‑hour and 10‑hour shifts as needed (PRN).
• Pharmacist responsibilities include day‑to‑day staffing duties which include outpatient clinic infusions and inpatient TPN. This position requires sterile medication preparation and dispensing, providing drug information, working with clinic infusion nursing and the billing team to troubleshoot drug approvals and therapy plan updates.

Key Responsibilities

• Review drug orders and/or prescriptions to ensure the safe, appropriate and cost‑effective use of medications.
• Provide outstanding patient care by optimizing medication preparation and resolving medication‑related problems.
• Prepare and dispense medications, provide drug information and manage medication therapy in accordance with federal, state and local regulations and hospital policy.
• Supervise the activities of assigned support personnel and verify the accuracy and appropriateness of all medications prepared by support personnel prior to dispensing to patients or dispensing to healthcare providers for administration to patients.
• Additional duties may be assigned.

Technical Capabilities

• Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance & Compliance (Advanced): Possesses specialized knowledge of the appropriate rules and regulations and applies them in difficult, stressful and complex situations. Demonstrates expertise and advanced knowledge of process improvement, and quality assurance techniques. Understands the principles upon which the rules and regulations are based. Demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement and maintains compliance with federal, state and local regulations as well as VUMC policies and procedures. Able to explain rules and regulations that are ambiguous or unclear.
• Pharmaceutical Computer Literacy (Novice): Demonstrated proficiency with computers and pharmaceutical computer applications to support medication use processes.
• Pharmaceutical Drug Preparation & Dispensing (Novice): Proficient in reviewing, preparing and dispensing prescribed medications, with foundational aseptic technique for sterile preparations to minimize contamination risk.
• Medication Management (Intermediate): Proficient in medication management, including determining clinical appropriateness, dose, dosage form, indication, contraindications, potential adverse effects and drug interactions. Able to monitor therapeutic duplication, interpret and assess patient laboratory results and provide drug information to healthcare professionals.
• Mentoring & Coaching (Novice): Trains and mentors others, provides constructive feedback, and removes roadblocks to success.

Position Qualifications

• Licensure: Licensed Pharmacist in Tennessee.
• Experience: Relevant work experience, less than 1 year required.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree (required).
