Position Overview

University Correctional Health Care (UCHC), operating within Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, seeks a Part‑Time Staff Nurse for the New Jersey State Prison located in Trenton, NJ. UCHC provides comprehensive physical, mental and dental care—including sex offender treatment—to individuals involved in New Jersey’s criminal justice system. The organization operates on a budget of $150 million and employs about 1,000 staff.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of residents, including adolescents (13‑17), adults (18‑64), and their families.
• Performs assessments in a variety of settings such as initial intake, health care units for sick call, emergency situations, chronic care clinics, and the infirmary.
• Works with health care professionals and security officers within the correctional environment.
• Identifies inmate‑centered goals and nursing objectives, implementing interventions and solutions for identified problems.
• Plans nursing care based on assessments, makes timely referrals, and initiates appropriate nursing care per institutional policies and procedures.
• As a team leader or charge nurse, delegates duties to other health‑care team members based on skill, knowledge, and experience, guiding the provision of care by others.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.

Certifications/Licenses

• License to practice in the State of New Jersey.
• CPR Certification required.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to transport between sites (own vehicle or alternative means).

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a correctional setting.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

First responders must possess the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes and be able to lift and carry an emergency treatment bag weighing up to 45 pounds, as well as assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds). The role is night shift and requires full onsite presence.

Salary range: <$37,230>–$54,050 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.

Position Status and Working Hours

Part‑time (20 hours per week), standard hours 40 hours, night shift. Full onsite work arrangement is required.
