Overview

University Correctional Health Care (UCHC), operating within Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is dedicated to excellence in providing physical, mental health, dental and sex offender treatment services to those involved in the criminal justice systems in New Jersey. UCHC operates with a total budget of $150 million and approximately 1,000 staff.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of the inmate‑patient, including adults (18‑64 years) and geriatrics (65+) and their families, within the framework established by the correctional system.
  • Utilizes effective communication skills by demonstrating respect, concern and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships.
  • Attends appropriate in‑services and continuing education offerings to obtain and maintain necessary skills.
  • Participates in offering education to inmates, security officers and other members of the health care team.
  • Participates in in‑service meetings and educational programs either as attendee or as a teacher, as arranged and approved by supervisor.

Salary Details

  • Minimum Salary: $37,230
  • Mid‑Range Salary: $46,540
  • Maximum Salary: $54,050

Working Hours & Arrangement

  • Position Status: Part Time
  • Total Hours per Week: 20
  • Standard Hours: 40.00 per week
  • Daily Work Shift: Day
  • Work Arrangement: Full onsite at Adult Diagnostic Treatment Center, Avenel, NJ

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.

Certifications & Licenses

  • CPR Certification
  • RN license in New Jersey
  • Valid Driver’s License required; must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation between sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

As a first responder, must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. Must be physically able to lift and carry an emergency treatment bag that can weigh up to 45 pounds and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).

Special Conditions

Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.

Immunization Requirements
