Employees at this level perform direct patient care that requireshighly specialized nursing skills and supervise the performance ofother patient care activities in an assigned area. They work undergeneral supervision from a designated supervisor.
Examples of Duties
- demonstrates a high degree of competence in the practice of nursingskills peculiar to a clinical department and supervises othermembers of the nursing staff in the performance of procedures andtechniques.
- identifies nursing care needs of a patient group, correlatesrelated principles of care, and establishes care priorities.
- evaluates staff's capacities and achievements in relation toestablished position descriptions, develops broad patient careplans, and makes and adjusts personnel assignments designed toimplement those plans .
- interviews patients and develops nursing care plans based onconclusions drawn from data; directs staff members in utilizingplans and evaluates the effectiveness of these plans; and consultswith staff members to redesign plans.
- identifies the need for investigating nursing care practices;develops protocol for and conducts studies concerning nursingprocedures and techniques.
- evaluates the effectiveness of policies and procedures as theyrelate to area of assignment; recommends the need forinterpretation, revision, or elimination and assists personnel inunderstanding and applying policies and procedures.
- plans and directs broad areas of patient management and requirednursing care activities for one or more wards or segments of award.
- prepares for therapeutic procedures in a specialized segment ofpatient care and supervises nursing personnel involved inimplementing those procedures.
- renders expert nursing care that focuses upon a highly specializedsegment of the patient's total therapeutic program.
- identifies the need for other specialized nursing skills in thecare of a patient and informs appropriate members of the nursingteam.
- develops patient teaching plans, instructs patients, guides otherstaff members in patient's teaching plan, and assists the patient'sfamily to participate in the patient?s teaching plan .
- in the absence of a member of the Administrative Nursing group,administers the patient care activities of a ward.
- performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois withthe Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation,Division of Professional Regulation.
- One year of nursing experience comparable to that gained as aStaff Nurse I.

Pursuant to the StateUniversities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates mustestablish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the startdate for this position.

About Civil Service Examination/Testing
The Civil Serviceexamination for this classification is based on your applicationmaterials and responses to the supplemental questions. Noparticipation other than submission of application materials isrequired from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meetthe minimum required qualifications for this position, yourapplication will move forward for examination/testing in which youwill receive a score calculated based on your education andexperience, and your name will be placed on the active employmentregister by exam score.
