Staff AccountantReports To: Accounting ManagerLocation: Washington, DC (Hybrid – 2 days/week onsite)Position SummaryThe Staff Accountant supports all the accounting operations of the organization and plays a key role in managing financial transactions, ensuring accuracy in accounts receivable (AR) and accounts payable (AP), and assisting in month-end close processes.
The role will contribute directly to CHCI's financial operations and annual audits. The Staff Accountant is an integral team player, in many instances, serving as a liaison and process support to all other departments within the organization. This position offers an excellent opportunity for growth in a mission-driven nonprofit organization.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesProcess and record accounting transactions related to Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR), including vendor bills and sponsor invoicesEnter new vendors and sponsors into the financial management platform (currently com), ensuring all account records (e.g. ACH information, W-9, and contact information) are accurateMonitor and review AR aging schedules for discrepancies and follow up on outstanding sponsor accounts with balances exceeding 60/90/120 daysSupport the Accounting Manager with month-end close procedures, including:Weekly – invoicing, accounts receivable, AP review, and journal entry postingMonthly – monthly close, general ledger account reconciliations (all assets and liabilities)Annually – 1099s, audit schedules as assignedWork onsite at CHCI Headquarters two days per week to manage physical deposit of checks (at nearest bank location) and other tasks as neededAssist with periodic vendor account review through collaboration with other CHCI departmentsCollect audit samples and maintain organized records for the Accounting Manager's reviewAssist with revenue reconciliation and tracking of grant submissionsArchive all invoice source documents for compliance and audit readinessMonitor the Finance department's shared mailbox and respond to critical sponsor inquiries.Secondary Duties and ResponsibilitiesAssists the Accounting Manager with administrative and finance duties as neededAssists with special projects, analysis and data gatheringComplete compliance research specifically related to financial responsibilities at the state and local levelsQualificationsRequired:2–3 years of accounting experience preferred, but entry-level candidates with strong attention to detail are encouraged to applyStrong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlinesExcellent written and oral communication skillsMust have the ability to work in-office twice per week at our headquartersEffective working in a collaborative, fast-paced nonprofit environmentCommitment to the mission of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus InstitutePreferred:Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.Proficiency with Microsoft 365, web-based platforms, and a CRM (preferably Salesforce)Familiarity with NetSuite, Bill.com and/or other accounting software is a plusBenefitsFlexibility for TeleworkMedical, Dental, and Vision insuranceBasic Life Insurance CoverageLife Insurance Coverage for DependentsEmployee Assistance ProgramFlexible Spending AccountWMATA SmarTrip Benefit/Parking Subsidy401k Retirement PlanPaid Federal HolidaysPaid Time Off - Vacation and Sick LeavePet Insurance OptionFurniture allowance for remote workAn organization-wide winter break between 12/25 and 1/1About the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI)The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-partisan organization founded in 1978, dedicated to developing the next generation of Latino leaders in the United States.
