The Role

Moderna is seeking a talented, experienced, and motivated Sr. Research Associate to join the Infectious Disease Research Immunology team.

The candidate will be part of a team advancing vaccine and therapeutic candidates from key preclinical through IND-enabling studies and will further support translational decisions across multiple programs. This role will focus on the design, execution, and optimization of antibody binding and functional serological assays to characterize humoral immune responses across preclinical models and clinical samples. The candidate will contribute to assay development across platforms such as ELISA, Luminex, MSD, and Octet, and support epitope mapping and antibody characterization efforts in collaboration with cross-functional teams. The successful candidate will generate high-quality data, analyze and interpret experimental results to inform vaccine and therapeutic strategies, contribute to the development of novel immunological assays, and support the evaluation of immune responses to mRNA-based interventions. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, detail-oriented scientist with strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a passion for advancing mRNA technologies to address unmet infectious disease threats.

Here’s What You’ll Do

  • Execute and optimize antibody binding assays across platforms including ELISA, Luminex, MSD, and Octet
  • Design, develop, and perform competitive and capture ligand binding assays
  • Perform functional serological assays, including blockade and enzyme inhibition assays
  • Conduct epitope-specific enrichment and depletion studies to characterize humoral immune responses
  • Maintain mammalian cell cultures and develop and execute cell-based assays
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data using tools such as GraphPad Prism
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records in electronic lab notebooks and contribute to SOP development
  • Prepare clear, data-driven presentations and reports and present findings at team meetings
  • Manage multiple experiments and projects concurrently, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Support automation of routine assays and implement AI-enabled workflows where applicable
  • Evaluate scientific literature to inform assay development and identify emerging technologies in infectious disease research

Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree with expertise in immunology, microbiology vaccinology or related field with 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Hands-on experience with ligand binding assays and strong level of understanding in designing and executing assays with increasing independence
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to evolving scientific and programmatic needs
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and commitment to data quality and reproducibility
  • This position is site-based, requiring you to be at Moderna’s site full-time. This position is not eligible for remote work
  • For this role, we are currently unable to offer immigration sponsorship. Candidates must already hold work authorization in US and be able to maintain that status without the need for future sponsorship

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • The ability to work across pathogen types (bacteria, viruses)
  • The ability to work in a cross-functional work environment is critical
  • Ability to manage multiple experiments and priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills; ability to influence and collaborate in a team environment
  • Candidate will be curious in exploring new path for drug discovery, bold in proposing creative experimental designs and ideas. Will work collaboratively with multifunctional teams and will be relentless in pursuing successful outcomes.

Our Mission and Vision

At Moderna we are pioneering the development of a new class of drugs made of messenger RNA (mRNA). This novel drug platform builds on the discovery that modified mRNA can direct the body’s cellular machinery to produce nearly any protein of interest, from native proteins to antibodies and other entirely novel protein constructs that can have therapeutic activity inside and outside of cells. We have a clear mission to propel the field of mRNA science forward and deliver new medicines to patients and a unique vision for how to achieve this mission.

Our Mission: To deliver on the promise of transformative messenger RNA (mRNA) science to bring new medicines to patients.

Our Vision: To unlock the potential of mRNA by establishing an ecosystem of teams and partners that will work together to develop the broadest possible array of drugs, across diverse therapeutic areas and routes of administration, for serious diseases that are not treatable today.
